What Winter Rye Seed would you suggest be used to overseed a lawn for zone 9a in Austin? Looking for a nice lawn we can enjoy over the next few months. Appreciate any recommendations on which seed to use as it's been quite a few years since I've done this.

Go get a bag of Lesco Double Eagle from your closest SiteOne Landscape Supply.

Just make sure it is perennial rye & not the annual stuff.

Make sure you buy ryegrass and not cereal rye. Some person at the feed store in valley mills sold me cereal rye two years ago. I opened the bag and saw what looked like wheat seed and then looked at the label. I was in a crunch so I tried it anyways. It was a massive fail. Ended up being expensive bird and rat feed.

Big difference between rye and ryegrass. As WaldoWings pointed out, rye is a cereal grain and not suitable for yards and lawns. You need to get ryegrass seed from your local feed store, comes in 50 lb. bags. It can be over seeded on your yard. Scratching or lightly disturbing the soil helps germination, but is not absolutely required. Rye is for pastures and needs to be planted on plowed or disked soil.
