Shot the Texas State Steel Challenge match out in Longview last weekend. I shot Rimfire Rifle Irons with the Tippman M4-22 and had a mediocre match so those videos have been memory holed, but I had a pretty darn decent match with my MP5 clone in Pistol Caliber Carbine Irons division.

I was most proud of this run on Showdown, which is the single best percentage I've put down with any gun on any stage: 94.97%. Literally 0.01 second faster and this would have been a Grand Master (within 5% of peak time for the stage) time. I would be proud of that regardless, but doing it with a factory MP5 trigger when I'm competing against guys shooting JP5s with race triggers, fiber optic sights, etc makes me extra happy.



If that sounds like gibberish, I'll try to put it another way: I'm racing against modern corvettes in an old hot rod and managing to keep up.

I know its hard to tell in videos, so Showdown consists of 2 18"x24" steel plates at 25 yards, 2 10" plates at 10 yards and a 12" stop plate at 12 yards, and that last run I cleared all 5 targets in 1.93 seconds.

Working on editing my footage of the rest of the match but I was really excited about how this run went.

For a 70ish year old design, its amazing just how good the MP5 is...and its a real blast hanging with the fancy race gun ARs using one.

Got the whole video edited.

6 stages, 3 M runs, 2 A and one B.

Improved my time on 4 out of 6 and brought my overall percentage from 78% to 82% with this match, so close to hitting Master with this gun.

I know I'm a broken record here, but yall should really try a steel challenge match if you've never done competition. It's a really good time.

Man, I'm proud any time I get a single run under 2.

But there was this kid on my squad. And I don't just say kid because I'm rapidly approaching 40, but an actual high school kid.

He won the match overall with his PCC. His total time for that first stage I showed (Showdown) was 6.96 seconds. So while I'm proud of that one 1.93 second run, his average run on that stage was 1.74 seconds with his rifle. He was in the 6s on 2 of the stages and in the 8s on the rest, so his slowest average runs were like 2.2 seconds.

Absolutely wild to watch that kid shoot.

There were several really fantastic junior shooters there, and a really good range of ages and skill levels across the match. It was good to see the shooting sports doing well.

Great shooting! MP5s are amazing and a piece of Rainbow 6 childhood lore for me. But their triggers are trash! I suppose its easy enough to upgrade? Never looked into it.

On another note Im headed to Leakey for a RNG this weekend. 8 miles/9stages. Pumped ! (aside from the 8 miles of hiking)

That's a factory trigger.

Counterstrike was my biggest gun influence game wise. Its basically the whole reason I own a suppressed USP Tactical.

You can buy lowers that accept AR and super-safety triggers. I don't know if there are triggers for the factory lower, but that is something you could search. Also, there is a guy in CO that does trigger work on factory HK triggers for a very reasonable price, and also has an extremely quick turnaround time. That is where I sent my SP5 trigger, and it came back with a very noticeable improvement.

That's crazy! I need to shoot more matches and shoot with some better shooters to push me. My bests in RFRO are 102 and 103 in the high 8's, 108 in low 9's and 105 in high 9's. Those all came in a match where I was shooting with a kid in the CCMU program that was burning it down and made me realy push it to keep up. I haven't shot a match in over a year and this is really making me want to get back out there with my PCCO and RFRO.

Timney makes a drop in for the MP5, but outside of binary or forced reset they are the only one that I know of. I"m sure there are others, maybe.

I'm lucky enough to squad up with some M/GM shooters at most of my locals (and a couple of them post here) and it really does help to see whats possible with more work.

And watching that kid was crazy. I've been around a lot of good shooters but it was something else to see him.

I don't think people who haven't seen a GM level competitor shoot can really understand just how fast you can be. It's like having an NBA all star walk up and join in at your pick up game in the park....next level stuff.

Those are all Century imported Turkish made guns (MKEs).

Century calls the top one which is an MP5K clone the AP5-P.

The stock is a B&T, it has a holosun 507k on a titan tactical single claw mount, midwest industries handguard, slate black vfg, arisaka light body and mount, malkoff EH1T head, surefie z68 tailcap, cgs mod9sk suppressor with a trilug mount.

Middle gun is the one I used for the match above, the full size clone AP5.

In that picture its got an HK A3F stock, B&T claw mount, low pro 30mm ring, aimpoint pro, surefire handguard

Bottom gun is AP5-SD. It's not a true SD with a ported barrel, it has a K length barrel with both 1/2x28 and trilug under the shroud. It has a MKE A3 stock, Overwatch precision 32 round mag, and a PTR Vent 3 suppressor.

I've debated converting the SD to a true SD with the traditional suppressor, but 147gr ammo is widely available, the Vent 3 is insanely quiet, and its much, much easier to clean this way vs a ported SD so for now I'm keeping it as is.

I hadn't thought about this in a while, but you reminded me of it.

I shot the SOLGW Carbine series a few years ago and squadded with a guy shooting an APC9K with a red dot.

He hung in there just fine on some of the run and gun/hoser stages, but watching him try to clear the stage with targets out to 400 or so was painful. I don't think he made it past the 150y target.

Pistol caliber PDWs have a special place in my heart and they're really good for a very specific niche, but they absolutely can't hang with rifles doing rifle things.

I've been to some rifle classes where that MP5 would have cleared everything just fine, and some where it would have been an absolutely terrible choice.

At this point I really want to be stupid/stubborn and hit GM with it if I can.

I have a set of HK Diopter BUIS sights designed for an AR in my parts pile that I'm tempted to throw on the Tippman too and see if that makes things easier than my current standard AR irons.

I would love to own one but its my buddy's - but the wait was.... 55 months

This thing was so sweet. The trigger wasn't even that bad for an MP5. Ported barrel makes regular 9mm sound subsonic. It's wild.

The ported barrel slows the round down to subsonic, which is why it suppresses so dang well.
