Modernized lever actions.

A little before/after as it sits right now.

Henry Big Boy X in .357. Ranger Point stock, Midwest industries extended top rail/handguard. Hoptic quivers and a lpvo are inbound, going to set it up for a clip on thermal and NV use while suppressed.

If yall say too many mean things I'll dig the JM stamped 1894c out of the safe and send it off to be sbr'd, threaded and tacticooled so be nice.

Love the Space Cowboy guns. Need to do that to my Rossi .357 Mag, it has a threaded barrel already, I just need the furniture.

How difficult was the install? Have two Henry x Big Boy's in .357 and have been wanting to do something similar to one of them for a while

I own five lever guns, three Marlins and two Winchesters. They were made in 1912, 1956, 1977, 1998, and 2006.

I wouldn't do it to the Winchester 1894 or the JM stamped Marlin I inherited from my grandfathers, but I don't care about a synthetic stock Rossi I bought in 2023 and want to try it out on a gun I hold zero sentimental attachment to. I do see your point though and wouldn't ever change out the wood on any family gun that was passed down to me.

They do look terribly goofy on the Midwest Industries website with the wooden stock and the modern handguard.

I have a nephew out in california who has a neck tattoo and wears black goth clothing.

This rifle reminded me of him. I hope that your rifle gets it's life together some day and quits dressing up in silly *****

I love both aesthetics in lever guns. Traditional will aways be awesome but a suppressed modern gun is also awesome!

Stock is literally the one bolt, slide off and slide on. I upgraded to the toolless takedown screw for the stock too, just because.

The handguard wasn't too bad. The most rage inducing, curse filled part was sliding the wedges that shim the barrel centered in the handguard down into the handguard and getting the bolts started, but even that was 10 minutes max.

I followed this video, which was helpful:

However, keep in mind that the .357 Henry's magtube retention screw is underneath the trigger guard plate, so you have to take the lever, hammer, and trigger guard plate all off the gun just to take the handguard stuff off. For that, I followed the disassembly/reassembly guide on this video:

Between those two videos, it was a pretty easy process. If I can do it, you can.

Isn't it?

I had a theory about the responses I was going to get so I didn't reply to anything for a day just to see where the conversation led.

An absolutely valid criticism of this build is that I'm taking a light, handy rifle and making it heavier and bulkier (although honestly the new furniture did not add a ton of weight).

One of the absolute greatest things about an old school lever gun is the lack of snag points, how easy it is to carry, store, etc. They're super handy.

But not a single person said "hey, you're making it heavier and bulkier and that's why this is dumb". Which would have been correct.

Instead I got the same responses here as I would have if I had asked the ladies knitting circle down at the Baptist church . "oh its ugly". Okay grandma.

I'm not even going to disagree with the knitting grandmas here that prefer the classic look. Old school lever actions are gorgeous. There's a reason I waited to build something like this off a modern lever gun instead of hacking on my JM stamped Marlin.

I view this like a Porsche 911 built for Baja racing. Is it ridiculous? Absolutely. Will it ever be as good looking as a classic, traditional 911? Heck no. Would you take a normal 911 offroad racing in Mexico? Also no.

What this Baja Lever gun allows me to do is run IR lasers, Thermal optics, and a suppressor. The sound of 158gr .38 hitting the berm 50 yards away today while zeroing the irons was as loud as the shot was. Like a bolt gun, not having a reciprocating bolt or ejection port blast means this thing is stupid quiet with subsonic ammo.

Someone mentioned Cowboys vs Aliens. This is definitely something the Predator would use to hunt down cowboys with in a Spaghetti Space Western. I didn't build it for how it looks. And like you said, I think anyone who has shot suppressed much with nods and thermals understands why this would be a fun tool...but the predicable responses were amusing anyway.

I have a few more odds and ends coming in so I'll keep updating the thread as I shoot the gun more.

ETA: Forgot to mention...even without lasers/thermal stuff, weight is similar on this to the stock gun, but I gained about 6" of sight radius, upgraded from buckhorn to a ghost ring and the new sights are high enough they clear the suppressor when mounted as well, which is nice. I wouldn't have any issues running it as is, the new irons are great.

Yeah, brown wood with black handguard looks off.

There are places that sell black laminate wood stocks for the Henrys and I debated that route.....the stock is easy enough to swap out I might still try one at some point but decided to go full modern for now.

I just view it as taking a reliable rifle and making it more functional than just 12 hours of the day.

Lever guns are neat because they have the quiet action of a bolt action, but much faster follow up shots.

While not "modernized" in the sense of the stock and fore end, this .22 Henry with a modern red dot is my fav for this sort of thing.

You are talking about the rifle that won the west. I say leave it alone and just use a flashlight like the cowboys did?

No, I'm talking about a Henry Big Boy X. A gun that wasnt produced before 2020.

Yalls hysteria would be appropriate if I was hacking up an original Winchester 73 or something.

But for this gun?

Lol
