Yea but three hours will. Which is the point.

But that's not what Giddings said, which is who I was responding to.

I do agree that 3 hours sitting in the stand with a screen is damaging, wasteful and rather pointless.

Devil's advocate take: When I take my 3 year old hunting and get an hour and a half of "hunting attention" from him, 30 minutes of watching tractors on my phone is sometimes the only way to make it through the end of the hunt. And we are minimal screen parents. If hunting is not enjoyable for him, he'll lose interest I'm sure and I'm not letting that happen. And right now, he asks to go hunting weekly.

But I get your point. If he was older I'd be on board.

I hear you...but we made it through not having them, right?

We made it through not having a whole lot of things back then that we have now too.

Really, if a toddler on an ipad or phone or whatever in the blind is that big of an issue, you are better not taking them at all until they reach an age that you can control them better and they can be occupied with staring out the window for 3+ hours at a time adhering to your blind rules.

Agreed. I would probably say a toddler is too young to be in the blind but thats just MHO

What people hunt out of today is mind boggling to me. When I was a kid, my dad and I would sit under the base of a tree on an old boat cushion out in Mason County. It was just us, our guns, and nature. We killed a lot of deer like that. Some of my best memories with my dad were spent there. I thought it was great.

Personal opinion here, my kid comes to deer camp with me for all of the OTHER times not just the time in the stand. He's 11 now and is actively involved in the hunting however I have been bringing him since he was about 5, had i made him sit silently with nothing to entertain him he wouldnt have made it these 6 years.

Some of yall sound like you see stuff constantly, my kid would love that...however there are hunts when i dont see a living animal...even squirrels etc.

At the same time I too dont like sitting there only watching the wind blow, dont get me wrong i will do that plenty as well but most of the time I have an ear bud in listening to audio books, podcasts etc. I catch up on LOTS of longform podcasts in the deer stand while still listening to the world around me and looking for signs of animals

Similar for me. My dad would pile up some logs, dead limbs and cedar bushes, around a tree …put an old quilt on the ground and we would sit. I always imagined it being a fort and Indians were attacking us.. No iPad or phone needed.

I mean, I first hunted on the ground and on "lean-to" blinds in Arkansas and had a blast, but that doesn't mean I am going to hunt that way my entire life. If I have the means and ability to hunt out of a blind and keep me and my kids out of the elements, why not do that?

I am not going to stick to the old ways of doing things just because of nostalgia...

No judgement here and I don't blame you one bit. To each his own. I just have too much of my dad's frugality in me. If I can achieve a goal without spending too much money to do it, that's what I'm going to do. I have other priorities where I need to direct my funds. Besides, I do achieve a sense of satisfaction when I can harvest a nice deer outside of a blind/cover not even wearing camo!

If you can get up here, I can get you on an elk or mulie. Lots of OTC options for elk near me and unit 11 is pretty low points for high desert mule deer.

Hell we didn't even have color TV back then. And only three channels to boot. My " iPad" would have been a Big Cheif Tablet and a #2 pencil…..Your story brought back good memories to me with opening weekend coming up as it was a big deal in our family.
When I was 4 -5 opening day didn't fall on weekends and they even let our elementary school out that day when I got older…no matter what day it fell on.
Here where we live now in the Ozark's, our little school district gives Friday and Mondays off on opening weekend of rifle season….its still that important to them.

Don't take your books in the blind either. Reading and hunting don't mix!

I don't know about anyone else but I have had some of my best naps I've ever had in a blind in an afternoon hunt. I mean drooling on your jacket type of naps. Guess cause I was so stressed working during the week I finally relaxed.

This.

I mean, back in the old days we didn't have 95% of the creature comforts we have that everybody uses every day - like computers, air conditioning, an unbelievable selection of food, internet, etc.

And I guarandamntee you that if most of those old timers that we think fondly of had the opportunity to hunt out of a comfortable dry blind instead of one that leaked when it rained and had a 5 gallon bucket instead of a chair - they are choosing the comfortable dry blind.

But this is the OB, so I digress. If you aren't hunting in a loin cloth and camoflauging yourself with a combination of deer poo, mud and leaves you rolled around in and then sitting precariously on a tree branch to attack your prey the old way, you are just a soft newfangled kid that doesn't appreciate nature.

When my kids were younger they did camouflage themselves with poo mud and leaves, not necessarily intentionally. Maybe they were just ahead of the curve!

Yep. Guess I'm considered an old and you're right. I'm spoiled now huntin in a nice blind that pushes over almost 3k cost.
My dad would not been able to afford even the plywood or 2x4's for a basic blind when I was young. But it didn't matter, I was hunting with him and out in the woods…..and I would easily trade that 3K blind for the chance to be sitting with him in that homemade brush blind for one more hunt with him in a heartbeat.

We used to have a guy on one of our leases who would rub grass all over him before going to the stand. He said it would block his scent. He was also scared of things that went boo in the night.

Deer are always at the feeder when I wake up from a nap. Best strategy!

LOL! Came home to hunt one weekend while at A&M. Sat at the base of a tree and fell asleep. Woke up to a doe nuzzling my foot. I must have been studying to hard.

It'd be nice to have this problem. As it is, between kids activities and the stupid high cost of leases, trying to get either me or my kids out to shoot a deer seems like a pipe dream. Maybe one day. Guess it's just fishing and maybe a bird hunt for us till then.

This is my biggest pet peeve when in elk camp with clients. I dont ever say anything but it is amazing to me to spend $6000+ to ride into the backcountry, hunt elk and at night you are on a freakingIpad or your phone and not enjoying the moment.

they are just there for the picture to post to Facebook

I need to hear this advice as well. I try all the time to just sit and be still, but 90% of my hunts I'm on texags or ESPN app. These phones are addictive as hell even for adults.

same here. but I swear I never see **** when I am just looking an browsing the skyline. If I look down at my phone I always look up to a deer that has me in a bind for getting a shot off.

This works in the duck blind too. I've always sworn the two best duck calls I own are:

Taking a piss

Checking my phone

I hear that. But in my case, an occupied mind never thinks! Gonna make it a point this season to abide by my self enforced rules.

I came here looking for this post. I have not service but if i did, I am sure I would be watching videos. Last place I would sit most of the day and just watch football in the blind.
