I never see much about Japan except for Tokyo and perhaps Mt. Fuji. Today I learned that they have a problem with bears. The article says that there have been ten fatalities so far this year! That seems like a lot of people for a country with a small landmass. The article goes on to say that thousands of bears are culled every year. That seems like a really high number to kill every year.

It's a short article and pretty interesting.

You might just have a skewed perception of how "small" Japan is due to the way we draw maps. I mean it's not huge, but it is definitely much larger than most people assume it is. Thousands of bears does seem really high to cull yearly though.

Interesting. Akita Prefecture is on the main island of Honshu. I would have assumed it was on Hokkaido given the article commenting on the rural nature of the prefecture.

Japan has a surprisingly deep rural population. It just their large urban areas such as Tokyo have extremely dense populations it is easy to assume all of the country is the same.

Their rural population is dramatically shrinking. Just like Texas
