I just learned that I'm going sandhill crane hunting on Christmas Eve morning somewhere near Lubbock. Never been crane hunting before, or hunted anything similar.

What kind of camo/clothing do I need for this? I'm pretty sure this will be a one-time hunt, but don't want to be the guy that screws it up for the rest of the hunters or look like an idiot.

General camo, you'll be either in layout blinds or a big tumble weed blind, face mask is also good (not required).

You DON'T have to shoot them with non-toxic shot, but better make sure no one else is shooting geese or ducks.

Listen to whoever you're going with and have fun!

Crane hunting is normally done from layout blinds in that part of the world so normal brown base camo will be fine. If they are throwing in specks or snows, the guides will have a white coverall for you to wear, but even that I have always thought was unnecessary.

Who are you hunting with? Our old place was from Haskell to Benjamin.

Good luck. Ribeye in the sky so take something to bring meat back.

My wife's cousin's fianc is a guide up there (don't know what outfitter he works for) and he's going to be taking us. Think it's just a "family" hunt since we will all be up there for Christmas.

ETA: just saw OnlyforNow's post. So I will go with a "general" camo.

Any other recommendations?

Nope...lay down...cover up, face down, be still....when he calls the shot, don't be overwhelmed by the sheer size of the bird!

You'll have a blast. It's a great time. When they hit the ground, you know it!

ETA: I always shot 12ga 3" hevi #2 or Bizmuth. Don't skimp on shells.

If you are getting this hunt for free, it might be a cool thing to buy the shells for the person responsible. At least leave your leftover shells for them, if you won't use them at home.

Stork shootin is my most favorite hunt to go on. We hunt here around Angelo quite a bit, just a group of buddies that like to chase em together.

Most guided hunts up that way will be out of an A-Frame with tumbleweeds to brush blind in. Main thing is to keep your pie out of the sky so the birds don't see your face and flare. Keep your head down until shot is called by person in charge. Blind should have some netting to look through, just don't be the guy poking your head out of the top of the blind to see the show.

As far as camo goes, I try and blend in with the dirt as much as possible. Earth toned colors that match your surroundings are fine, don't need to be camoed out completely since you're inside an A-Frame, but you can if you want. I wear a face mask since I usually call the shots for our group and have to watch the birds while they are cupping up.

I've hunted cranes several years in a row around Lubbock and Abernathy. Our guides always recommend 3" or 3.5" BB shells. We always use nontoxic shot because almost every time we get geese (and one time ducks) coming in too. Our outfitter uses big hydraulic trailers that are covered in tumbleweeds. Their eyesight is really good and they're kinda spooky. Sometimes they circle above the spread and if they see something they don't like (faces looking up, blue hats) they'll leave.

Stare at the ground and don't move until the shot is called. They have the best eyes in the bird world.

Their eyesight is crazy. One trip our outfitter put a camera in the decoy spread and camouflaged it all except for the end of the lens. The birds would not commit. He ran out and grabbed the camera and the next group came right in.
