Does anyone have any experience with either location after the split?

Yes, it all depends on the weather when the split opens- rain, wind, northers just before and during the second season. We have some good hunts in the Houston area in December and January some years but it's only when the doves are here. Wet and muddy now in our area but there were some good dove numbers before this latest round of rain in certain areas.
If picking a location today I'd go to the Hondo area if they have birds. I assume it would be much drier than Houston area hunts. We've had about 5 inches of rain recently so fields will be muddy thru December.

Same here. We've hunted El Campo for years and started getting fewer and fewer the past 3 years. We opted to head toward Austin this year off 71 and had the same amount of birds.

No clue on Hondo, haven't ever hunted there just drive thru going to the Frio

Im my humble opinion, you need to get a few hours S,SW to have a decent dove hunt in December. Dove numbers at my parents house ( which were decent on opening weekend) in Victoria county not were non existent on Thanksgiving day, but the white wings were plentiful in Cotulla the next few days while in the deer stand.
