What are y'all thoughts on this buck's age? Do you think he is seven? Buck is in Dimmit County. Really appreciate the input.

Awesome buck. 5.5 is my guess.

Yeah I couldn't age him at 7. I think he's mature and likely 5.5-6.5 but no way is he 7 or 4

Thanks folks. I can get him to 6.5, but I just cannot determine the difference between a 6.5 and 7.5 YO deer. We've let so many deer that look like this walk on our lease, only to have them regress the following and never come back to what they were. Pretty frustrating.

Ive seen them at their best potential and score at 5.5 and 6.5. They regress after 7.5 in my experience

6.5 can be slightly bigger than 5.5 in my experience but I've never seen one blow up, ceteris paribus… major range condition swings can absolutely change things.

Only way I see 7.5 is if he is on free choice protein and feed year round. I've seen 7.5 deer that look like that if they have been on full feed all their life. If feed is only seasonal, then I would lean to a younger age.

Still looks more like 5.5-6.5 though. Do you have pics from earlier in the year to see if his neck stays that size all the time? If his neck stays big year round, I would think he is probably at his peak.

Agree with 5 could make him 6 if you had photos to back-up. .

There's not anyone on earth that can look at deer one time & age it with 100% percent accuracy.
Too many variables.... you need pics of year by year progression to be accurate.

That said, I think this fella is 6.5 at most, maybe 5.5.

5.5 IMO
Beautiful deer

We hold off on out trophies until 7.5, our 2 biggest ever killed were 8.5 yo, one broke 200", blew up 20" from 7.5-8.5. We knew the deer since he was 3.5. Low fence, cotton seed year round.

Age, nutrition, genetics……dead deer don't grow.

Sway back and hanging gut. At least 5.5 or more. Shoot him and let's find out!

This! If you want a good deer, you can shoot him now. If you want a potentially great deer, then you know the answer. I've watched a ton of 150-160" deer in the 5.5 year range, hoping to get them some more age and better antlers, only to never see them again. But that's part of it. It also helps to get that deer a couple more years to spread those good genetics.

If I remember BMJ lease rules if that deer isnt old enough the rack may be confiscated and he may be escorted off the lease.

I do agree that deer appears closer to 5.5 than 7.5!

The hide around his shoulders is too taught, no jowels under his chin, and his neck is too defined for me to think anything over 5.5.

We keep year over year pics of good deer - and I've seen digressions and then 20" jumps too. I've seen the a 4.5 year old stud ten turn into 160" 8 at 7.5. I think older deer tend to be smarter and don't get themselves injured and hurt as much in the rut or run down. I've seen a 4.5 year old cover a 5.000 acre ranch while a 7.5 year 180" deer stay in 150 acres. Not a perfect science but it is surely fun watching it happen.
