Did a forum search but only found folks looking for tanners. Anyone got a good home method for tanning a deer hide?
Thanks!

Yes, the best method to tan it at home is to ship it to North Texas Tannery. They'll mail it to your home when it's finished.

If I recall, get some plywood & stretch it out over that & heavily salt it for maybe 3-7 days, then get to work scraping all the flesh & fat off. Then you soar it in a 5 gallon bucket of water with some mixture of canning & pickling salt, alum & something else for several days. Then you let it hang dry & periodically stretch, ball up, wring out, knead, basically work it then you're done.

Have done it several times years ago. It's a laborious task but certainly doable. There are several methods and tanning formulas, but you first need to decide if you want hair on or off (buckskin). There are lots of books and articles but I would suggest looking at YouTube videos, there are some very good one out there.

The old man in Montana on the mountain man show would scrape it and use a solution with deer brains to tan it
