We've been at the lease since Thursday and this was the first shooter buck we've seen (on our last hunt before Christmas); Old and grizzled 10 pt.

My dad and I have been trading off hunting partners, and this morning I was with my youngest and this guy walked out.

I told him to take him and he dropped him at 75 yards with a near perfect quartering towards front R shoulder shot.

Problem is big brother (11) is very unhappy.

Did I majorly screw up by letting you get brother shoot a nice buck instead of having him hold off for a spike? Older brother did shoot a doe Friday night.

Life lessons. Fate isn't fair. Opportunities come to us all at different times, and it is meant to be that way.

Not at all. Older brother will want it even more now. Opportunity only comes here and there, so take what is presented. My youngest is a much "luckier" hunter than the rest of us. Makes it seem easy.

exactly. no matter how hard one works or "tries" to get a trophy, there's a lot of luck involved. Can't tell younger brother not to take his opportunity when he gets it. He may not get another one that good for years and years. Older brother might go 3 for the next 3 years. Or he may NEVER get one. Should younger brother hold off FOREVER?

As an oldest child I will say that he will get most of the wins/firsts in life. Its not going to kill him that his younger brother got to hang one in the win column.

No, but it would be a good plan that the older brother gets dibs for the rest of the season and into next season.

If they both had equal opportunity and uou didn't give younger brother an unfair advantage then older brother needs to accept that it's hunting not shopping.

If you and their grandfather were both doing your part then you should be proud of your youngest for making the ethical shot. Deep down older brother is probably proud of younger brother, he just wishes it was him.

I grew up with 5 brothers, when we were younger we all hunted together on one of my grandfathers 1200 acre ranches - it was luck who would get the good deer every year- I remember when my younger brother first started hunting and he shot the nicest buck- that made the rest of us want to be out there even more. Someone always got a nice buck and the rest of us got junk.

If you didn't let the younger one shoot it, he'd be the upset one and resent you for hunting then passing a good buck.

Its hunting as mentioned life lessons to be learned

Then there's this: How many young men want to go deer hunting that don't get the opportunity at all? They always leased my grandmother's land so that was out. Finally, I was able to kill a spike on land owned by a family friend. I probably shouldn't have shot it with my surplus Lee Enfield .303 British but I knew I may not get another chance. I was 15. That was the last I've even seen a deer to aim at.

Romans 12:15….rejoice with them that do rejoice….big bro needs to be happy for little bro and his biggest cheerleader…good teaching moment you got on your hands Dad.

And what a blessing for it to be taught over some whitetail buck deers.

No you're being a great dad. Big brother will be fine. Great life lesson to be had here.

Philippians 2:3-4
In humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

I get it since he's only 11, but I see a good teaching moment here, also. Championing little brothers and others accomplishments will take him further in life than realizing "life isn't fair" imho

If you mean about my experience, my brother shot one deer then basically quit hunting we're very different people. So it didn't really pertain to me.

My dad didn't say anything but he felt shooting the deer was the right thing to do.

Older brother wasn't happy most of the morning but during the cleaning he was ribbing younger brother about "poor shot placement" and "this deer isn't going to taste as good as his doe." Then they proceeded to climb all over a big old oak tree, play football, etc. Went to a party last night and he was happy to tell people he got a doe and his brother shot a nice buck.

Appreciate the advice/words.

As the younger sibling, the eldest doesn't need to get all of the firsts in life.

Great deer.

I tell my kids if life were fair it would be us on the cross and not Jesus.

My son has stopped complaining about things not being fair.

I didn't grow up hunting (not because my parents weren't great, but because it just wasn't part of our world). Now, I'm trying to learn as much as I can in my 30s so I can hopefully pass it on to my kiddos when they come of age. It's tough to do without help!

From where I'm standing, both of your boys already hit the lottery. They get to grow up learning a skill, a tradition, and a respect for the outdoors from their dad and granddad. In time, the memories will be a lot more meaningful than the bragging rights (which will likely change hands multiple times and only draw them closer together as they try to one up each other for the rest of their lives).

Just my two cents (adjusted for inflation).

Teaching our kids to handle disappointment is critical. Too often parents bend over backwards to keep their kids from ever experiencing negative feelings, and that's failing them badly. Someday down the road life is going to punch them in the mouth and they aren't going to know how to deal with it. It's our job to teach them to be gracious losers and to be resilient in defeat.

Perfect time to learn how to be happy for someone else's success. It's hunting. His time will come.

Man, is this really a thing with siblings? Sounds like one of those tv ads from the Latter Day Saints. I think my parents were just happy if a day passed where blood wasn't drawn between us kids.

Siblings are our first friends and our first enemies all rolled into one.

I have two boys, 9yo and 10yo and I have this issue all the time. They both are always jealous of each other and often times want to go to the lease without the other. I tell them the one who is willing to spend time at the lease will get the kill.
