We just noticed a spot where our 7 year old Goldendoodle is losing hair. Other than licking it, it doesn't seem to bother him.

Any clue what this could be?

We will take him to the vet tomorrow morning but would like to know tonight if possible. I'm sure he didn't have this yesterday.

I appreciate any help yall can provide. My kids think he might not make it. And I don't know what to tell them.

Looks like a hot spot (skin infection). Definitely take him to your vet. If you can get an Elizabethan collar to keep from licking it until you can get in.

Yeah, any skin irritation or injury they'll often obsessively groom. Sometimes so much it loses hair and remains irritated. You need to treat the cause and prevent the licking and nibbling at it so it heals.

We got an inflatable donut from Amazon for our lab to wear after his surgery when he kept ripping off the cone of shame. He didn't seem to mind it at all since it gave him a headrest where ever he laid down. Are there any downsides to the donuts?

Donuts don't always keep them from being able to reach the area.

We have a lab that has had two knee surgeries. The first our vet put the funnel on his head. It drove our lab nuts and he constantly broke them….plus it hung up on everything in our house. We ended switching him to the large doughnut and he could not reach his hind legs to lick. On the second surgery we just used the doughnut.
I'm sure there are some areas that the doughnut won't work but they aren't expensive and you can give it a try anyway and save your dog and yourself a lot of grief if it does work.
