I need to get better and memorizing names. It's always been a problem with me to the point that I've tried to get into mnemonic tricks to help with names and association.

I don't envy others all that much, but those with exceptional memories.....I do covet.....

I've also always had trouble remembering names. I can remember numbers but not names. I have found that on some people their name is a lot easier to remember if they show you their tiddies.

I just never call people by their name. When I make the mistake of asking someone their name, by the time they tell me I remember that I don't actually care. I'm not a politician or in sales

Yes sir. Lots of difference between book smart and having common sense. I know some extremely intelligent people that can't figure anything out on their own.

I think the stick shift thing is fun and all but it's weird to me how people get hung up on that.

It's not rocket science, but We can pretty much much put it in the category with pouring musket balls, changing fuses in the electric panel, and driving a mule team.

Yeah, as much as I think everyone should learn to drive on a manual, these things largely just don't exist anymore outside of sports/performance cars. In the '80s and even '90s, you'd find many standard trans cars out there and not knowing how to drive one could be a detriment. Now, just knowing the absolute basics -- essentially how to move it with people pushing -- is all but sufficient.

I'll tell my standard trans story: I'd been driving less than 6 months when I agreed to help some friends from church open a small retail store. The man had this older panel truck -- think Suburban with panels instead of windows -- that had the three speed column shift. I knew, basically, how to drive a standard, but hadn't had a lot of practice. Anyway, he says to follow him (me in the truck) to the store, about 2.5 miles away and we'd take the highway service road. No problem.

Well, we get to the first major street red light and I'm the lead vehicle. The light turns green and I take off. Vehicle dies. I start it again, it dies. Now, I'm halfway into the intersection. This goes on for just this side of forever (actually, maybe 30 seconds at most but it was excruciating) when I realize it is in third gear and not first! I put it in first with everyone around honking and giving me the finger! I get going and clear everything but my shorts. I make the mistake of telling my dad that night and he couldn't stop laughing.

I had a buddy with "three on the tree" truck in HS. Fun to drive.

Had a similar experience as you in Mexico. Rented a car (Chevy Monza) with stick, no problem. Until you are waiting at a red light and the Federale behind you in a bronco starts laying on the horn. I guessed that I had better go and took off in first. Didn't see the huge speed "bump" / mountain ahead and bounce on it and stall out. Look back and the Federale is laughing his ass off.

I see a bunch on here didn't have Dr, Joe or Chris Townsend's AGED 340 Leadership class or was not a freshman in the corps.

First day everyone had to introduce themself: First & Last name, hometown and major.

Next class, you had to know everyone and where tested.

You learned how to remember names and facts.

Back to things that need to be known.

I believe everyone should know how to read (words or pictures) instructions and be able to follow them. I also believe you should be able to write (communicate in some way) instructions so most people can do what is being communicated.

I'd make a trade. Take half of those off the list but instead teach a kid how to be inquisitive. Teach them how to find the solution to a problem. Maybe they wont know how to do these things but with a bit of inquisitiveness, they'll want to find out, and feel like they have the ability to do so.

Too many young people are almost totally visual learners - because that's how their brains have been trained. They have no common sense, and can't figure simple things out.

Ehhh, I consider this at times as working smarter and not harder. And more than once I stopped part way through doing something because it just didn't seem right and watched a youtube to double check. On at least one occasion I can think of it was a very smart move because the bolt I thought I needed to remove was not the bolt and had I removed it there would have been a hellacious mess to clean up and it would have added probably 2-3 hours to my job.

I'm a visual and hands on learner, so watching something being done is a good way for me to learn. Because 99% of the time the written instructions are written by somebody that has never actually used the design and they maze zero sense.

Might as well get specific:
Single action revolver
Sa/da revolver
Glock/striker fired pistol
1911
Pump shotgun
Break action shotgun/rifle
Bolt action rifle
Ar-15

Those would probably keep you from looking like an idiot in any situation where you might find yourself around people with guns

No need to be John Wick, just be able to check if loaded, clear, and set down or hand over with an open chamber

I'm not saying it's not a good tool. I've just seen from being a teacher for 10 years previously that very few students were able to take a variety of instruction types and couldn't do anything with only their brain (critical thinking) - I.e. doing math without a calculator - they couldn't solve problems that were abstract (i.e. critical thinking skills), but could only solve concrete problems. They couldn't use "street smarts" to solve a problem.

When I was a 20-something and had zero money, I knew nothing about cars, but solved issues with my car with duct tape, etc.

They can't think outside the box.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

When I was a kid, we didn't have "YouTube". We had "Service Manual"…..here's a 4" thick book that tells you how to fix the thing…and here's a 4" book with all the pictures and part numbers so you can call your part guy and go get it after he figures out the number from 7 superseded iterations.

Ahhh, the old Chilton's manual

You have a flat tire, turn to page 246.

Step 1: Disconnect negative battery cable

The guys that wrote Chilton went on to build the part system for all automotive parts houses "sir, the four speed clutch you need, is that for an automatic or a manual?"

Have you seen the aftermarket manuals for tractors? I can't recall which one it is, maybe IT I don't know but it's like "flat tire: pargraph 4-2"….but it's not in order or something. It's just bizarre. It works well once you "get it" but it's funny the first time I opened one up.

Best thing to do with a kid is consistently send them off by themselves to solve problems. You will find some real head scratcher solutions but at least the kid came up with it on their own. My two sons told me just last week that the older they get the more they realize how few of their friends are capable of solving problems. That when asked to do something they don't know how to do they freak out and go find someone else to solve the problem. I have seen a lot of that in the 20-40 year old age group as they started entering real life. Honestly, it is present in almost all generations. Doers do and then the rest wait to see what the doers did. Raise doers. If you focus on teaching them to think for themselves and solve the problem however their imagination decides to, they will learn a lot of stuff on that list by default.

Never done a button but dozens of rips and holes by this point for me. Learned while in service and have used it ever since to mend and patch. Have saved clothes multiple times now that otherwise would have been trashed.

To go along with this:

Learn how to solder properly. Basic soldering skills can repair untold number of basic electronic problems throughout the house and field.

I love YouTube videos because they will discuss the order to do the work which is great if you're faced with a complex job that you've never done before. When I rebuilt my front end I had never done it before and that was definitely a job that I needed to follow specific steps on.

That said, I have no theory of mind for someone that needs a YouTube video for simple tasks like fixing a tire or replacing an electrical fixture.

I agree. They are a good resource, but not a substitute for developing problem solving skills. All I'm saying is that I've seen for too many young people today who can't solve simple tasks without their electronic device, or who use their electronic device to substitute for their brain (i.e. using a math app to "solve a problem", and then can't do the problem on an exam).

The brain chemistry of recent learners is vastly different than previous generations. They can't solve abstract problems; they can only sometimes solve concrete problems.

I think the worst thing that we've done in education is mandating the use of computers for everything. It invites a lot more cheating and makes it alot easier.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Every other hand is either sevens or low in Booger county.

I had never even heard of sevens until I got to A&M. I refuse to play it, which drives log [the poster here] absolutely insane because he somehow thinks it's real dominoes.

It's dumb. Might as well just have everybody flip a single domino over randomly from the wash per hand and debate on who won that way.
