Need some suggestions/help!

I'll be in Montana the last week of June this year. We will be staying somewhere around Yellowstone for 3 nights and then near philipsburg 3 nights. I know we will do a wade trip on Rock Creek for 1 day. Trying to decide on where to do a float trip.

The place we are staying near philipsburg also offers float trips on rock creek. According to them rock creek is as good as it gets. Anyone have familiarity with rock creek or other rivers in the area? Or should we do a float trip somewhere closer to Yellowstone for a change of scenery?

Thanks for any advice!

don't know about June but we had the Lamar river in the canyon next to the park road all to ourselves. Great cuttthroat fishing

I would also check out the Madison river below Hebgen lake. Here is great resource https://www.montanaangler.com/montana-fly-fishing-rivers/madison-river-june-fishing

All the rivers around Missoula are great. Book a float thru Blackfoot River outfitters. Fished with them several times

If you are near Yellowstone/Livingston, I highly recommend Nelson's Guides and Flies (https://nelsonsguidesandflies.com/).

Thanks for the input! I know it can be runoff season in late June depending on where you fish. Hoping I get lucky and hit the salmon fly hatch.

87 if you see this would love to hear your feedback as well!

I 've fished all the places mentioned but I'd recommend the Beaverhead out of Dillon. It's a tailwater. The Yellowstone can still be dealing with runoff in late June. The Madison is an option but I really prefer the Beaverhead.

Wife and I managed an Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Lodge 12 miles up Rock Creek.

Rock Creek is a little over 50 miles long, has some of the highest fish and bug counts in Montana. It is widely known as the best place to catch 5 species of Trout & char (cutthroat, rainbow, brown, bull, and brookie) in one day in MT (plus you'll probably catch a big Whitefish too) .

Mid to late June is when the Salmonflies hatch and it is as good as it gets then. Runoff is normally over on Rock Creek by the first week of June.

A wade trip and a float trip are going to cover different areas. Rock Creek is renowned for wade fishing, but there are some stretches that are only accessed by a raft. Only 3 outfitters have permits to guide on Rock Creek so it doesn't experience the heavy boat traffic that most of rivers in Montana see during peak season. Float trips by Outfitters end June 30.

Some other options around P-burg are Flint Creek. Small creek with big trout that is hard to access unless you are with an outfitter who has permission.

Georgetown Lake pretty much like fishing a Bonefish flat for big Rainbows.

Upper Clark Fork. The Clark Fork flows north so the "Upper" is to the South and the "Lower" is to the North of Missoula.

Don't skip the candy store in P-Burg and Philipsburg Brewing has great beer.

Blackfoot River Outfitters has permits and access to all of the waters around Missoula and P-burg if the place you are staying doesn't.

While it is true that Chocolatelabs can't fish worth crap, he gets all of his fly fishing info directly from me so he has good destination advice and travels to nice places even if he doesn't catch much while he is there.

Awesome info! Thanks so much. Sounds like Rock Creek is a pretty special place. I can't wait to get up there!

Will the lack of snow and the warm temps impact fishing in the spring and early summer?

I doubt it will be a problem until August and early September, but low water, temporary closures and "Hoot Owl" restrictions have become the normal for late summer in most areas.

Specifically talking about Rock Creek; its watershed starts high up in the Pintler Mountains so it is a lot colder than the Big and Little Blackfoot, Clark Fork etc.
