Lighting, lighting, lighting, and power

Task lighting at work benches. Good overhead LED lighting for the entire shop.

Dedicated receptacles at work benches, figure out where you need 30A or 50A plugs as well for welders and other equipment. Retractable extension cords over each bay if also a nice addition.

Put your compressor on the outside wall of the shop with an enclosure around it so you don't have to listen to the compressor when using it, then plumb in air drops where you need them.

Speakers if you want music also...

Build the biggest you can afford. 14-16' high for tall doors, I like at least 3-4 doors on each side and two large end doors to facilitate driving through. I like lean-to's on BOTH sides. As for inside, you don't need inspiration. You just need to start working in it and putting what you need when you need it. Don't clutter it with inspiration before hand. Space is limited...no matter how big or small it is. I work on a lot of trucks and tractors and like having a lot or room for my 54 and 72" tool boxes to make things more mobile between bays I'm working on at the house.

We went with a 30x60, with 30x12 enclosed man cave on one end, with a storage loft above. 16 foot eaves. Love it so far.

Which is usually cheaper, Red iron or cold form?

Cold Form by about 10-15% depending. But it is a much "lighter" Structure.

I like when the girts are flush with the uprights and not on the outside. If the girts are on the outside, it makes the columns stick into your shop space more. Mostly affects shelving and placement of large objects.

Then you would prefer a red iron structure over a cold formed one.
