something off with my garage freezer

In my garage I have a chest freezer and an overflow/beer fridge. No problems with my chest freezer at all.

I noticed yesterday that some of the meat in the freezer of my beer fridge is starting to thaw while the remainder of it is still frozen rock solid.

I checked again just now and the packages of sausage in the door feel soft but the ground turkey in the door is still rock solid.
The summer sausage on the bottom shelf feels soft but the ground meat, pork loin, goose breasts, duck breasts are all frozen solid. I don't get it.

Not making a great seal?

We bought some of these to make sure the doors stay shut on ours.

Just an idea….Try putting a ratchet strap around the door for a day or so to keep the seal smashed..see if the meat freezes solid. That'll give you an idea if it's the seal or not?

Also, you might want to make sure that the vent where the cold air comes in (in the back) is not blocked with some items. Looks like you are not getting cold air flowing to the front of the freezer.

Cold garage temperatures and regular fridge/freezer combos not rated for garage use don't play well together. The temp sensor for the whole rig is on the fridge side. When your garage gets cold, the fridge portion stays cold enough without having to run the compressor. Over time, the freezer temperature rises above freezing while the fridge stays in good range.

You have to get a garage-rated unit for cold ambient temp usage.

Not enough stickers on it. Gotta up your game.

Looks like the bag of fries isn't allowing a seal when the door is closed.

If it wasn't a good seal wouldn't all the stuff start defrosting instead of 3-4 items on the door while other items on the door are still solid as a rock? Same with the main compartment. The summer sausage is middle/bottom and is soft to the touch. Everything around it is solid as a rock.
And the bag of tots isn't messing with the seal as far as I can tell.

Holy cow...thanks for suggesting those.

My family thinks they have to slam the garage-fridge door shut, with the force of 1,000 Vikings.

This causes the freezer door to crack open on occasion. This will solve that issue.

Had the same problem. Our garage fridge is OLD. Has done the trick for us.

Now that the temp outside has been above 20 for a day or so it seems to be back to normal. I just checked on it and my sausage is hard again.

Well that sounds kinda weird…….

Anyway, my food is all frozen again.

When we get a cold snap, I put a droplight in the chilled section of my refrigerator on the top shelf near the thermostat.

It puts off just enough heat to cycle the compressor occasionally without making the chilled side get frozen.

Seems crazy to warm up your frig to get ot to work, but it has worked so far.

Never knew this was a thing, compressor not coming on because the fridge is staying cold. Of course we dont get a great deal of really cold weather in Southeast Texas. I was a little skeptical at the beginning of the thread, but I guess it makes sense.

I guess I always just ran a heater in the garage but I never heard of this either. Makes total sense, though.
