In a world of constant firearm change….change can occur while still kinda staying old school too.

You can't go wrong with a classic Win 70. It's everything a Rem 700 wants to be, but never will.

Normally we hunt with AR's because of the water and mud and everything else at my swamp lease, but the last few years we've gotten somewhat nostalgic and started bringing our bolt guns back out every other weekend or so. Something about an old school bolt gun that will always feel right, even if you have to be a lot more careful with how you handle it.

Bingo. 100%.

These guns have been CRF since the early 90's with the intro of the the "Classic Sporter". By the mid 90's all model 70's were again CRF. this has remained the same through all changing of hands and production in New Haven, Morgan Utah and now Portugal manufacturing.

It hasn't changed at all except for the trigger which was changed a bit. It's as good, and many say better than the old ones.

Imagine having a product so great that the best you can do is put on different wood and spruce up the appearance. It must be like having an R&D meeting about the old wood spring loaded mousetrap. What is there to improve? LETS ADD BETTER WOOD! Lol.

I do think the current Portuguese rifles have a better fit and finish than my old classics for what it's worth and I believe them to be slightly more accurate although I've never had one that didn't shoot MOA or sub out of the box.

Great rifles.

I have/had some older early 70's vintage BDL's in varmint barrel configurations and standard contour. Also in same timeframe had Model 70's. They were very comparable then imho. After those years not close.

Gunny, is there a waiting list or tryouts to get in your will?

Also, I started your book recommendation, With God on a Deer Hunt this past Saturday. I didn't get very far because the pigs came out to play, but I'm looking forward to a longer sit next weekend.

I have a Rem 700 BDL 7 mm Rem mag- gun is 30 years old and probably shot 3-4 deer, its been in the gun case collecting dust. No one wants to shoot it, you need a new shoulder if you try to site it in

With all the recoil absorbing qualities of a brick.

All of mine have the red pads but I might have one that had black. Winchester switched to those at times, probably the newer 6 digit classics but I'm not sure.

the photo caption said they are now pachmayr decelerators so that should be an improvement.

I have a Winchester 70. Featherweight from the 1980s in 6.5 Swede. Very accurate, beautiful, great trigger, but it is snappy as ****. Surprisingly so for such a moderate round.

I would hunt with it more if I hand loaded.

You think an AR is more reliable than a bolt action in the "water and mud"?

He did say they're a lot more careful.

I didn't say more reliable.

We typically grab the AR because it doesn't matter if it gets muddy or rains on it, etc. Hose it off, throw some oil on it and you are back to original.

I baby my wood stocked bolts quite a bit more than I do an AR. Still use them, but just baby them a lot more because of what they are.

Love my Winchester model 70's I have sold almost everything else. Have pre 64's in 30-06, 270fw most accurate rifle I own, and 300h&h; stainless classics in 243, 270, custom 300wm, 300wsm and 375 h&h. Still looking to purchase just the right pre 64 supergrade which is going to cost me big.

My only blued model 70 is a new in the box controlled round feed classic in 6.5x55.

Had a South Carolina gun, 270 stainless and walnut featherweight, I never should have sold it was really nice and accurate.

The model 70 push feeds are very underrated even though I prefer crf.

That's the same one I have. I also had it NIB but I now shoot it and have hunted with it.

I am not saving it just haven't got around to it yet. You through me with the 80's. I believe it was push feeds in the 80's and the crf came back in the 90's. I haven't checked mine yet but I read they were 1/8 twist which would be way ahead of their time.

Mine might be 90s. I can't remember. It is control feed. And a pretty good shooter but is a little snappy.

.270 Win. My grandpa's gun and my favorite. The Leupold 3-9x is still crystal clear and holds a zero. It will live on with my son and hopefully his kids. Grandpa was a .270 guy. I have his Rem 700 also in .270 with a fixed 4x weaver also. He bought the 700 from Sears!

I miss that man everyday.

The 700 has some character:
