I adopted my Kaite, a flat coat retriever, from the local animal shelter in 2015. She's been a great companion for the past 10 years. She was suffering from liver cancer, which was just diagnosed a month ago. I held her head as the Vet relieved her of her pain and felt her last breath on my face. The house is just not the same. RIP Katie Kate.

Sorry for your loss.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Very tough. Dogs deserve the longest life possible. Sucks. So sorry for your loss

Sorry for your loss. I've done the same sadly so many times. It never gets easier. Just remember the memories and good times….and thank God he allowed you to have her in your life while you did.
Dog is God spelled backwards for a reason.

Boat racing is like beautiful women……..expensive, high maintenance, but well worth the fun!

Thanks, it's never been easy. This is my 7th time to part with a companion and it always hits me like the first time.

I'm sorry. I understand the deep hollow feeling inside when the time comes, but it was one last thankful kindness at the end of what I am sure was a great relationship. In many ways a dog is what we people should aspire to: faithful, honest, and happy with the simply joys in life.

We just lost our 10 yr old golden on Friday while we were out of town due to something very sudden that we don't know the answer to yet. Part of me is very upset that we didn't get to truly say goodbye and the other part of me is thinking if he would of deteriorated as fast as he did in front of my wife, she'd a been a crazy wreck. Sucks either way and we are sure gonna miss em. He was my gift to our wife when we got married.

So sorry for you. Losing a good dog is one of the hardest things. Done it more than I like, and dread thinking about 2 special ones in our house. Told them they better plan on living forever.

Sorry to hear this, Doc. Been there, done that. It's gut-wrenching. Keep reminding yourself that, every day you had her, you did the absolute best you could for her. She was blessed to have you. Cry a little, but think of her every day...and smile.

I'm so sorry. I know that empty house feeling too well. My beagles will keep her company until you see her again someday.

I want to share some words that I read some years ago. I have these words superimposed on a picture of my beloved Gabby, my 12 year old English Lab that went peacefully one spring night in 2024 while sleeping next to my side of the bed:
God said I need somebody strong enough to pull sleds and find bombs, yet gentle enough to love babies and lead the blind. Somebody who will spend all day on a couch with a resting head and supportive eyes to lift the spirits of a broken heart, so God made a dog.

After reading about your loss, I got out of my recliner and reread this that is hanging on the wall behind my recliner, and wiped another tear from my eye. Sorry for your loss but take heart that when the time comes your buddy will be waiting on the other side of the rainbow bridge for the reunion to come.

I've posted this before. Put Gus down Jan 2 a year ago. Worst day of my life next to losing both parents.

Although I've been told to get another and take care of him / her, I don't think I ever will. That pain of saying yes to the vet as Gus went away was horrific and I don't ever want to go through it again.

Gus was sick and I don't regret the decision. Nurse daughter told me I held on a bit too long. It was the right call for Gus. But it was gut wrenching and a feeling I don't want again.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. As a teen, I recall Paul Harvey reading the poem "so God Made a Dog". I remember that every time I've gone thru this. Every word is so true.

I understand your feeling. When you get a pet, you generally know you're going to outlive them, and you'll have to make that choice eventually. The way I choose to look at it is that the days, weeks, and years of love you can give them outweighs that day you have to let them go. That day is truly terrible, but the time before is what you'll remember.

Damn it's dusty in here. We don't deserve dogs

I'm very sorry for your loss. I lost my Golden in November. He blessed our lives for exactly 10 years…he passed on his birthday, after mustering up the strength to hold on so his best buddy, our Aggie son, could come home and say goodbye.

I understand how you feel.

Had an old Aggie country vet in Fredericksburg tell me something once when we put one of our dogs down many years ago.
He said he believed that God puts a little of the spirit of your passed buddy into the next puppy you get. So each time you go through this your getting a little bit of each passed buddy in each.
I have found what he said to be true seems like…..so I always get another pup…and what that old vet said always seems to be….i see a little bit of all my past buddies in the eyes of the next one.
The companionship and happiness and memories are worth the pain in the end to me.
