It is so hard to make the call.

Scout is a coton tzu and turned out to be a really great little dog (except for a bad marking habit). Sweet loyal smart and a better toy retriever than any retriever I have had. He is only 11.

Few years ago he started having periodic neck/back issues. Maybe a few times a year. Vet gave us the appropriate meds and let us keep them onhand for flare ups. Flare up always went away in a few days. This one has not been over a week and he is obviously suffering when the meds wear off.

He also has small dog teeth issues. In 23 he had over half his teeth removed when they put him under for dental work. They choose not to remove one large one on the bottom because they were concerned about the removal breaking his jaw. Apparently a thing on these little dogs. As is the bad teeth. The vet thinks there is a strong chance that tooth has abscessed and is adding to the general problem and pain.

After two separate vet visits and some X-rays and an antibiotic shot and painkiller shot and 750 bucks he is not getting better.

He is barely ok while the meds are in effect. Not himself, but not yelping and whimpering and will follow me around and eat (though the tooth thing is presenting in that he won't take anything remotely hard) and poop. As soon as the meds wear off he is bunched up wobbling around, often front right leg is wonky and he whimpers and yelps as he still tries to follow me everywhere only to flop down on his side then back up and down on the other side obviously trying to get comfortable and not able to do so.

Feel like the tooth will not be resolved. If they were afraid to pull it when he was theee years younger, now seems like a bad idea. Not exactly sure whet is going on with his back because, as much as I love him I cannot justify spending thousands to further diagnose a senior dog when I know I would most likely not proceed with any major surgery, if any are even an option.

He really wanted to go in a walk last night with my daughter's pup. He made it half a block before he hit a wall.

I feel terrible but I don't think he will come back and that I need to do it tomorrow afternoon. Spend the rest of today and tomorrow morning with him. So far today can't make myself call.

Super sucky. Sorry to hear that. I know you didn't ask, but it feels like you might be interested in opinions and if not I apologize….. but Based on your description,I feel you are making the right decision. We had to do that same with a large dog that was 7, so don't let age be a guide for you. If he is in pain, and the information you have right now says he is not going to get better, then all we can do in life is make the best decisions for our friends as we can. Don't second guess later and don't wait too long. The lan of waiting too long lasts much much longer than the pain of doing it too early.

Still sucks and sorry you have to go through the situation at all.

We have a 14 year old dog. She is not moving at all like she used to. She falls down often, her hind legs just dont have the strength. She hears, and sees OK. She seems other wise ok. She does sleep a lot more than used to. Eats less. Has accidents with potty. I don't know when is the right time to make that call. I feel like most days are ok but also most days she just exists.

That is a lot harder to judge. Had to do that one a couple years ago.

This one, the pain thing is pretty obvious and makes it more clear. Harder in some ways to me because I am more bonded to this pup. Daughter brought him home (with permission) around the holidays as a 7 week old, then she and my wife went to visit relatives for a week while I stayed home with the new puppy. To hear my daughter describe it, I intentionally stole him. Wasn't intentional, but we did kind of bond.

Have a call into the vet to talk it over.

In the same boat with our oldest collie. It is always hard to know when is right. But remember your intentions are the best.

Spoke with the vet.

She said there are options for stronger pain medication and steroids. But agreed that ultimately none of them are going to cure the root problems. If conditions have declined enough that we are just masking symptoms, we are really just delaying the inevitable.

Made an appointment for noon. I could change my mind, but I don't think I will. It would not be the best thing for him.

Hate to hear this...
“It was miraculous. It was almost no trick at all, he saw, to turn vice into virtue and slander into truth, impotence into abstinence, arrogance into humility, plunder into philanthropy, thievery into honor, blasphemy into wisdom, brutality into patriotism, and sadism into justice. Anybody could do it; it required no brains at all. It merely required no character.”

Ugh, just went through this back in September, it's the hardest thing to do.

Is your pup suffering? Has their quality of life and happiness faded away? Are they in pain?

If the answer is yes to 2 out of 3, then you can do what needs to be done. It sucks....Lord knows I prayed hard for Him to do it for me.

My advice, call an at home service and love on them till the very end.

No more pain.

Had a terrible morning. Could barely take his meds. Of course by the time we went to the vet at noon, he was acting like nothing hurt and he was 5. Interesting how he was unusually calm there. Maybe he knew and was trying to say it was ok.

RIP best little puppy.

Sorry to hear about your pup. We lost one, a 8 yr old, after a rapid 2 week decline.

It hurts and it sucks but you did the right thing for your little friend.

He was in pain. He could not do a lot of things he loved. It was the right thing to do. Still sucks and hurts a lot.

It is interesting to me that not all dogs/pets are equal. I love all dogs. All animals. They like me. But today made me think about the difference in a dog that is a pet in your house and a dog you truly form a bond with. They are definitely not the same.

I guess the special ones are the ones we are lucky enough to bond with. He'll even my wife, who likes animals but isn't necessarily an animal lover, bonded with this scout and was right there with me at the end crying.

Wonder if it is the dog or the connection.
