There is nothing more outdoors than horse races!

Derby winner will not go so no triple crown potential this year.

Read a quote by the lady trainer that said essentially that it takes a particular kind of horse to be ready to run again in two weeks and that "he isn't that kind of horse". Will be interesting to see if he runs in the Belmont, I'm guessing no, think the extra distance may be more than they are comfortable running him. They won't say that if he doesn't run.

I didn't really like/care for what that trainer said. Granted I'm not a race horse trainer... BUT
I get it, you everywhere the Derby but never expected to with it. Your horse was odds last. You probably just wanted to run the distance against that field.

But! You moved up from dead last and won the Derby. Now you tell me your horse doesn't run well on two weeks. Parson me, but I don't think you know much about your horse.

You had a plan to take the horse to the Derby then race him for years to come. Well you have a Derby winner now. Things just changed

Yep, and I think those things might be things called "stud fees". No idea about this horse but doesn't sound like a triple crown candidate to begin with but sad we'll never know. There was a time that "experts" didn't think Secretariat could run at a distance.

It's not uncommon to skip the Preakness.

Horses are funny creatures and they really do take care, training, and conditioning. This is a big money game. I think this is an injury risk issue. For English, I don't have the desire to purchase new horses for my daughter and she doesn't have time to train green ones to performance levels, so if the animal performs better than expected, she may duck out of the next competition if its too soon or he was pushed too hard the first time. She is with her horses 3-4 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and has been since she was 14.

The trainer KNOWS the animal, and these aren't 30,000-40,000 dollar horses. They are multimillion dollar animals and they have equine protocols on race day regarding drugs and injections so animals really do need to be in top condition.

Personally, I think this is a good and responsible decision.

Human athletes are similar. Just performance animals on two legs. How many football players get shoved into a game to 'win the game' and then get their careers ruined?

Bush league or not, over a third of Derby winners have skipped it snd more the half in the last 7-8 years.

If you want to read some interesting information on race horses go find Ron Turcott's description of riding Secretariat.

I was happy to hear Golden Tempo was entered. Last thing I wanted this year, or the last two, was a tripple crown winner. With the Belmont Stakes being run at Saratoga one more year while renovations are completed at Belmont park, the race is 1-1/4 miles (10 furlongs) and the same as The Kentucky Derby. Normally, it is 1-1/2 miles. The 5 week span combined with the various distances of the three races is a huge part of why it's so rare to have a winner. I'd prefer no winner that requires an asterisk and footnote.

You could have stopped here.

It's literally their job to know the animal, their tendencies, and train / run according. While many trainers have "their" core program, it is typically modified and tailored to the animal. If not, you aren't with the correct trainer and stable / kennel.

To run or not is also a joint discussion with ownership that has the ultimate say regardless.

Yeah, definitely a weird year with 2 of the 3 being at alternate venues this year.
