We have female lab pup just over 6 months old. Vet suggesting we go ahead and spay. I understand there are some risks and trade offs for doing it before or after their first cycle. I'm stuck on which route to go. Any recent studies or recommendations to help make a decision?

My vet has recommended to me to wait an until my pup is at least 9 months, a Great Pyrenees mix. She said if she hits her first cycle, chances of mammary cancer increasing is minimal, but will go up with each cycle. If done too young,, could result in bone and joint development. So, right now, we are planning on getting her fixed around October-November timeframe.

Thanks- my vet was ready to do it today (just over 6 months), but I am going to hold off for now.
