Starlink on the water

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm going on a trip to the Chandeleur Islands with my wife and a few other couples in a couple of weeks. We have two small kids that will be staying with grandparents. My wife has informed me she will not be going if she can't FaceTime our kids.

My thought was to get Starlink for a few days but I have no experience with it and their website isn't very helpful. Does anybody have experience with this? I heard there may be a special plan for inland and offshore trips.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

I don't think they have plans for specific areas, but maybe someone rents them out? I haven't seen that option.

Just buy a Starlink mini and after the trip you'll have emergency back up at home if your primary internet goes out. You can swap between standby mode for $5/month and whatever the roaming plan is as needed.

LOTS of info on thehulltruth.com. Pricing and plans have been changing rapidly so you'll have to do some research.

Staying on a guided live aboard? Check to see if they have it. Be surprised if they don't. Most of the big charter offshore boats have it now.

It will work virtually anywhere. You can buy the mini for like $199 and then it's $55/month. You can buy a turnkey kit with battery supply if needed too

Help me guys. Is this really a problem?
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

For some, it is. I would think the boat would have some kind of comms where they could be reached in case of an emergency. But if you can't be away from your kids long enough that you insist on contacting them while on a vacation, you probably shouldn't go.

When I was a kid, my parents would drop my sister and I off at our grandparents for two weeks in the summer. We might go a week without talking to our parents.

that's a tight spot.

She's really telling you that you will not be going and using your children against you.

Make no mistake, she is acting out like all women do and is seeking leverage due to her own insecurities or maybe this is just a hormone-driven deal that has only surfaced recently.

Buy starlink now and she will find some other fault with you.

Good luck bud, this is something you're saddled with for the duration of the marriage.

Normal moms are super thankful for time away from the kids and interactions with other adults. They don't always want to be "mom," they want to be the young women they once were before hormones and kids changed her life and self image forever.

I go there every other year through Due South Charters (big boat). They had starlink on the last trip. Just call your charter to see if they have it.

Jesus. The guy is asking for help and we have posters telling him his marriage is F'd. If you're not mature enough to leave helpful information and avoid unsolicited advice then don't post. Not everyone needs to hear how smart you are.

You can cancel when you're done using it and not pay any monthly fee. They tell you that you might not be able to reactivate but I have not had any trouble with that.

Really? How hard is it? Everything Starlink is clunky IMO on the customer service/billing side. Set up is cake but turning off, on, changing service type, is a pain and very unclear.

We only use ours for our RV so we maybe buy 2-3 months a year and don't have any need the rest of the time.

Respectfully disagree.

We've got the large roam set up on two of our survey boats, and two minis we can take anywhere for field work (or to the lease).

Super easy to log into the website and change usage and plans for us.

I remember thinking it was kind of clunky the first time I changed service plans, but then I realized how awesome it is to have that flexibility at all.

What other tech company has created a product that is so differentiated and performs flawlessly, but doesn't force users into a ridiculous annual contract?

It's as simple as opening the app and toggling one button. There's not many things simpler.

We are full time liveaboards on a sailing catamaran in Thailand. Starlink has been a game changer for us. We regularly get 100-300 mbps which is more than enough for FaceTime and streaming video.

Hard to tell exactly what your application is, so telling you what dish or plan to get is difficult. Starlink plans change frequently, so we follow a YouTube channel called Mobile Internet Resource Center. Here is a good video below that goes through the various options.

Usage and plans is one thing but completely deactivating?

That's what I'm referring to. Mostly to avoid the $10 (was $5) service charge that I don't need 9 months out of the year.

Yes we turn on and off when we don't have jobs to absorb the fees. Granted we've done it only a few times per unit, but last year and this year we've done it about 4 times (total).

I was thinking more along the lines of Brad Paisley and "I'm going to miss her".

weird. I just logged in on my phone.

When I go to Service plan, all I see is Standby mode and then Resume service.

No option to "deactivate" to turn off the $10/mo charge.

Standby is what I'm calling deactivate.

$10/month is basically free considering everything else we do and the cost of everything nowadays. But we're on an old plan, it might actually be free for us to go to standby - I'd have to check.

Sorry for the confusion and potential misleading comments.

Thanks for all of the replies and info. I had our group leader contact the captain. They have Starlink on the boat so I don't have to jump through any hoops.

Also, thanks for letting me know my marriage is a failure and I need to pull the plug now. That's news to me.

Sometimes the bandaid doesn't hurt as bad when it's ripped off fast, pawpaw. You know this or willfully forget it.

you're entitled to be defensive. I would be too. Hopefully you figure your situation out and she lets you go fishing with her and the group.

Good luck and please post fishing photos. That's all this board really wants to see.
