Almost lost a thumb today catching a snapping turtle

I was fishing after the storm here in CS on a lake I've fished almost daily for two years now. Turtles are everywhere and I just so happened to ask my neighbor randomly the other day if he's ever caught one by surprise. He said not by surprise but a time or two with chicken liver to kill them.

Well, here I am fishing for large mouth bass around 6:00 pm using a soft plastic 4 inch swimbait on a 2/0 jighead. Hooked something very heavy from about 15 yards out. Something about the bite and its movement didn't feel right.

Kept reeling and this big ass turtle appeared and was hooked real good. I was in a bit of a state of shock, grabbed the net, and proceeded to land it. My scissors were nowhere in site.

So, I then got pretty close to it trying to determine how hung up in the net it was, location of hook and lure, etc.

I extended my right hand somewhat close (maybe a foot away or so) in an effort really just to get a hold of the line and this ******* snapped at me so fast and furious it was unbelievable. It got both sides of my thumb enough to make it bleed for 15 minutes but not enough to do any real damage (I don't think).

After realizing what happened and doing some research on common snapping turtles vs alligator snapping turtles, I realized I was very lucky to either not lose my dominant hand Gig' Em thumb or as my neighbor said, not have to go to the hospital with a common snapping turtle still attached to my digit.

After it snapped it got loose off the hook and jumped back into the water. Feel free to flame away. It was an idiotic and total amateur hour move for sure.

But, has anybody else been snapped on before? It was freaking intense. I will post full video of the encounter as soon as I figure out how.

I was crabbing with a chicken neck on a string in a brackish creek when I was a kid. Tossed it down into a deep hole and felt something grab it. Started pulling and it felt like I had hooked an old tree limb. After pulling strong and steady for a couple of minutes, I saw a large round shape start to form out of the murky water about 2 feet in front of my bare feet where I was standing on a submerged rock. It was a giant alligator snapping turtle about 2.5' long with a head about as wide as my adult fist hanging on to the chicken neck. About the time I let go of the string and jumped to the shore, it bit clean through the chicken neck and left half of it behind as it sank back into the depths.

Okay this sounds way more terrifying than my experience which wasn't really that scary at all until I got bit.

i hope you put some antibiotic ointment on that. I think there's a lot of bacteria infection risk with snapping turtles.

I have three pics to post, two of which are very good freeze frames from the video. One with it hooked and one with my thumb snapped. But imgur stopped working for me a long time ago on this site. Are there any alternative ways to post photos?

Uploading the video now to post. I'm sure I'll get called ******ed and that's fine. It wasn't my best moment in a flustered/shocked state of mind.

There is certainly from the environment. I used a lot of antibiotic soap but couldn't find any Neosporin that I know is around here somewhere.

If I could figure out how to post the pic of my thumb I would. It's not as bad as one would think, especially after seeing the freeze frame picture close up of the turtle's mouth on my thumb from the knuckle up and on both sides.

Had it not shocked my nervous system to react so quickly when it snapped I could be a goner.

When growing up on the Guadalupe we often caught them on trot lines or sometimes when seining for bait or hook and line fishing. They get real mad when hooked.
Got snapped many times but nothing serious. It was way before anyone knew what Neosporin was. We were country kids. Dad might pour some "coal oil" on it if it broke the skin… and then some "BFI" powder and went on with the day….. just a normal day on the ranch with the rest of the bites, stings, catfish spine sticks, cuts, punctures, scratches and burns of a country kid barefoot on a summer day working the place. No infections or loss of fingers/toes.

Been bitten a couple of times by smaller turtles and it definitely isn't pleasant.

I caught a trash can lid sized soft shell before in lake Travis and they have a long reach and are difficult to handle but fortunately I had seen a trick on a tv show before: grab a back leg. That worked pretty well.

After watching the video, it's obvious the turtle was fed up with hearing "oh my gosh" every few seconds and that's why you were bitten.

Dang. You got lucky. Things have some chompers on them. Time for another tale…several years ago a client was complaining about her cattle losing teats. Basically this was happening randomly during the summer months when her cows would stand in one of her stock tanks for extended periods. I made a trip to her place and examined a few of the cows including one fresh one. Looked like it was sheared off. We go over to the pond where this was happening and she asks if I think it's possible that it could be a snapping turtle. Though I never saw the turtle I am convinced that is exactly what was happening.

Really makes you think twice about skinny dipping!!

Yea I think my mom had 'monkey blood' in every cabinet and I had it applied at least once a week for some injury. Cure all and hey, I made it this far.

I've had some fairly close experiences with large Alligator Snapping turtles. I know for a fact they can crush a beer can and splinter a wooden boat paddle.

This is completely fair and if I were that turtle I'd be annoyed as hell too even though I was trying to save it for some unknown reason. I'm just a city boy by nature thrust into outdoor life.

The funny thing is when I was a kid I grew up shooting innocent turtles at my Papa's ranch through a scope with a .22 rifle with no regard for their lives just for fun.

Suddenly snag one on a hook and I'm a PETA mega donor.

Yes. This is the main pic I wanted to post. Incredibly the injury to my thumb wasn't worse. The snap was so quick on video that it looked like I didn't get got.

The freeze frame proves otherwise. Praise God for my cat like reflexes. I almost won a Darwin Award.

I don't think almost is appropriate. You win going away. Stupidity of fortune. Wow.

You're lucky that turtle lived in CS and quickly realized the error of its way. If that had been a turtle from a pond near Austin it would have taken your thumb.

Darwin awards by definition are always awarded posthumously, since it is an award for creatively removing yourself from the gene pool. While this could have been much worse, it was not Darwin award eligible.
