Hug your kids and don't let them horse around on ATV's, 4 wheelers or golf carts without full gear and adult supervision! So sad.

Unfortunately, I know what these families are going through. They have a rough road ahead. Prayers sent.

Horrible. To think how many miles we were on three wheelers and four wheelers when I was younger... no gear. No supervision. Just off and gone and not close to home or visible to anyone. Prayers up.

Dang. That's tough. I rolled our 4 wheelers so many times as a kid. Guess I learned early how to shuck it off of me to the side. We have friends' kids that have really gotten hurt on golf carts.

Prayers to the family and friends as my youngest just graduated 8th grade. Can't imagine their grief right now.

I will tell you as an ER doc, I don't understand the blind trust people put in their 10-15 year olds who can not legally or never have driven on a paved road where there are very little obstacles to driving something with way less safety features on terrain that could be hiding any number of dangers. These modern UTVs are fast and cumbersome. They're not dune buggies but teenagers drive them like they're in the Baja 500.

I get the desire to let your kid do it because I grew up where we were out on the four wheelers all the time and unsupervised from 10 on. I am very lucky I wasn't hurt more.

I get it that that's how we were raised, but once a year at least I'm dealing with a dead or maimed teenager.

And this post isn't meant to be disrespectful to any of you who have had issues in the past with ATV/UTV accidents, but it is a warning to those who haven't yet dealt with this. Teach your kids to drive. And drive well. Make sure they understand the limits of what the machine they're driving can do. Make sure they realize the consequences for their bad decisions. Teach them to say no to letting somebody drive who doesn't know what they're doing no matter how much it costs them socially. Don't be afraid to put a governor on your machine.

It takes one hole, one drop off, one obstacle they didn't think was there, one second of not paying attention, to forever change or end the life of somebody.

For sure. I used to ride three wheelers and dirt bikes with a football helmet. I think the big difference is these ATV's are 2-3x faster and can go 55mph. Heck even golf carts can go 25 mph. The three wheeler we would ride at our friends house might top 12mph.

Friday morning was the 8th grade send out to highschool for Aledo. Some of the boys carried his jersey through school during it.

Then Friday night, a teenager girl from Aledo was severely injured in another ATV accident.

The electric scooters are an issue too. Someone needs to pass a law on their speed. I'm all for kids having fun, but I see what has to be 23-25 mph going by my house.

I think this kind of thing has always happened...and a lot. We just didn't hear about it as kids. They eventually banned 3 wheelers for this. I think today, a lot of it is also, as stated, the speed and capability of the machines. I have an old "Heald Hauler" from the 70's that is basically a 3 wheel tricycle of sorts with saddle bags. It's like a precursor to a Gator or Mule. It's tippy. But it also goes like 10mph. But, if you have 200lbs of feed on the sides, and you tip it over, it could be bad.

In contrast, some of my four wheelers have speedometers that go up to 60mph. That's never a good thing for anyone under the age of 30 with brain development still in process.

Just gotta be safe with kids.

I agree. Part of me wonders if we have been conditioned to believe that if something is legal, it is inherently safe. I can't think of another legal activity that is as dangerous for kids as driving an ATV. I guess shooting a gun, but the safety mindset is more front of mind for most than driving a little vehicle.

Awful.

I can't believe I never got hurt on my four wheeler growing up. Never wore a helmet.

My boys are at the age where they're about ready for some gas powered toys. I've already decided we'll skip the ATVs and go to UTVs. Rollcage, seatbelts, and helmets.

Nothing wrong with using a bike or your own two feet to go adventure places as a kid. You can cover plenty of ground and get some exercise too. In fact plenty of adults could stand to use the same approach

Years ago, NW80 royally chewed me out about getting an ATV. I am very utilitarian about its use. I typically walk when given the option, but there are times it is handy (S&R operations).

I get it…. bigger better no big deal…but our Kawasaki Mule is pretty much just a ranch tool and I never worry about the kids piling into it…. IDK what top speed is maybe 15mph…. thats plenty fast if things break wrong but its no where close to 50/55 or more of some of these machines…..maybe just dial it back a bit parents …. every AtV doesnt need to be able to keep up with traffic flow on I35/I20 etc…. just my $.02

I got several middle of Friday night calls when he was working in Houston due to shootings. Only one from Austin due to a ATV. He really hated them!

Feel the same way when I see little kids (and adults) flying around in golf carts. Don't know what it is an about getting into a golf cart that makes people think they are invincible.

ATV's are responsible for the most deaths for kids, but I can't find anything on a relatively quick search that breaks it down beyond just the ATV category - so we are talking about 4 wheelers, side by sides, motorcycles, etc. all lumped together.

I was nervous about letting my kids drive the Mule around the neighborhood. First several months I rode with them and wasn't mean about driving, but was pretty militant about speeds and turns, etc. One benefit of the complaints people have about Mule's not doing 75mph like Rzr's or Polaris Rangers etc is that they don't do 75mph. I think my governor on the PRO is 46(?) and it takes a minute to get to that speed. I have about 5000 miles on my buggy now, pretty sure the kids have 3500 of those under their belt. They don't drive it nearly as much as they used to now that my oldest has a car, but they definitely put the miles on it when they were a little younger.

Kids are always going to push the limits of what a machine or even bicycle or skateboard can do. That's what kids do, you combat it by being a good teacher. But in the end, you can't watch over them 100% of the time and have to trust and pray and hope.

John Deere turf Gator is 15 mph.

Hear about too many of these horrible incidents.

Do we want to talk about e-bikes and scooters…..the number of kids I see rolling around on these things without a helmet or care in the world is unbelievable.

electric dirt bikes are next up. We have a dozen or so kids riding them around or neighborhood.

Yeah, kid used vehicles of any type need a speed limiter to that of a brisk run, 12-15mph. And if it is heavy, helmet, harness, and cage. These things can be done safely but you do need to plan for kids being kids and limit the potential for harm.

The adult type equipment should really be limited to adults and older teens who have demonstrated the responsibility and understanding of the consequences of abuse. I imagine most parents have a good idea of which of their offspring fall in that category or outside it. It probably pays to err on the side of caution.
