This is one of those instances where you actually look at the government as your friend. We are all on the same team in this one. Well, at least the boots on the ground fighters are. If you see a case in your livestock, report it. If you are in a quarantine zone, work within the rules. They aren't really overly burdensome. Everyone has to do their part. That includes ignoring all the noise and panic out on the interweb and simply watching your livestock, doctoring when needed, reporting when needed, and following quarantine rules when needed. The guys working this on the government side are real people that are working for real resolution. Ignore the politicians. They are blowhards trying to get political points. Half the guys working this on the government side are fellow Aggies. Listen to them and work with them. Get real information and not internet information.

Solid post.

We've dealt the fever tick a few years and even though I'm a couple miles in the green - lots of my friends are behind the line and I've lived it through them. It just means a few steps and inconveniences - but if respected they will pay off. It's like the boll weevil - only through cooperation will there ever be eradication.

I am beside myself that our Commisioner would suggest otherwise.

Dipped and vaccinated Dectomax today to move cattle into the tick quarantine zone. Ear tags and one umbilical sprayed.
Tick rider said that along the river we are in the safest place around. Hey have been dropping flies trying to create a buffer zone . They are a bit baffled how the flies seemed to jump the barrier area.

Solid.

Makes you wonder how many staunch Government Bad folks might be tamping that mentality down a notch.

Dude, it's not even difficult to find the actual timeline information; do better.

The biological barrier in Panama that had contained the New World screwworm for decades was breached in 2022.

The parasite re-emerged in Panama and Costa Rica in 2022, marking the first time in years that the sterile insect technique barrier failed.

This breach allowed the flies to move northward through Central America and into Mexico, where they were eventually detected in Chiapas in November 2024.

The pest subsequently crossed into the United States, with the first confirmed U.S. case detected in South Texas in June 2026.

It is moving because something has changed about how host animals are moving. Has the infection started moving in a migratory bird population? Did rulescon livestock transportation get very lax north of the old barrier zone for the decades it was suppressed and contained? Is it moving with human migrations (and their pets) north when we had the flood of illegals immigration caravans during this same time period? It may be difficult to determine but stopping it from recurring will require finding out.

My thought is that the density of host animals is a lot higher than it used to be and that means a higher parasite density and that means more sterile males are required than before.

Crisis averted!

Have a couple hundred head of ewes to hit with injectable dectomax this morning. Got them in the pens around 7:15 am and asked my dad where the meds were. He thought I picked it up last week and I thought he picked it up. Called our feed store and got the last two 500 ml bottles they had left in stock.

I think my innitial reaction is Texas has become a large hobbiest cattle state in the last 20 years. So many smaller plots where absentee owners place a dozen head for a tax break. NWSW has the potential to run rampant in this environment.

And the large ranchers have had the luxury to not need hands "riding" the herd like will be needed if this starts to get out hand. There will be a huge shortage of labor and a large in crease in costs that I don't see a solution to without the State and Feds getting a handle on this quickly.

Interesting they specify sheep. USDA has cattle on the stuff for NWS and Ticks.

Recent rains are not helping. My dad's cattle weren't coming to his calls because there's too much to eat in the brush. He went through it in the 60's. He said they doctored newborn calves non stop. Didn't lose any cattle but it was a lot of work.

saw a video of a hog in oklahoma on Facebook that looked like it had it. hard to tell what is and isn't legit on the internet, but I am hoping it isn't up here already. it also wouldn't surprise me since it was already confirmed in San Angelo.

Look up the black market cattle industry in Mexico. Cattle crosses the southern border. Unchecked. Unregistered. Unrestricted. You also have accompanying animals in the massive human hoards. It simply overwhelmed the Darien Gap and surged northward

I always assume these types of things are weeks or months ahead of what we think. Just maybe not in observable numbers.

Right or wrong I've put Safe-Guard licks in feeder pens. Do it every year before fawning starts. It's Fenbendazole. Makes me feel better anyway and the deer hammer it.

Yes. Dropping millions of sterile flies a week from aircraft.

It's a bit more difficult to treat wildlife compared to livestock.

Isn't that more for intestinal worms?

I know I sound like a broken record, but how are nasty, fighting, open-wound-having feral hogs not the perfect host for this mess?

Yea but it's a parasitic lick. Best I can do.
