So we have given him the NSAID every morning and three days ago started CBD dog treats and have given him gabapentin at night. Yesterday he only did the random barking thing a handful of times in the late afternoon and the last three nights he has slept through the night on our bed, which has been amazing.

The vet said that it could have been severe inflammation or pain which the NSAID would help with.

Of course as I typed this he started doing the half bark freak out lol. Either way we seem to be on the right track.

I asked about this yesterday and she said from the vets she has talked with, they have seen very little success with it.

Good call on CBD pills.

Another thing, my wife lets him sleep on the bed when I am offshore and I don't allow him to. Been arguing for no dogs in the bed my whole marriage, but that's neither here nor there. At night when we let him on the bed he seems to chill out, at least he did two nights ago, although he was still a little restless and woke me up a bunch. Last night though with the gabapentin he zonked out on the bed all night. Tried to have him sleep on the floor and he was pacing and barking. Ugh, guess my bed got a little smaller.

Dogs get used to being on the bed next to their owners if you let them up there. if you allow it sometimes they basically freak out when you don't allow it. I would bet this has something to do with what yall are experiencing… been there done that. The older the dog got the more he basically freaked out when he couldn't get on the bed. Pacing, whining, barking, getting up 3-4 times a night, yep, your sleep will not be good with all that going on

The gabapentin you can get through the regular drug store for cheap. Vets charge an even higher markup than regular pharmacies on meds because they dont get the bulk. But gabapentin is cheap at say Walmart. My healer takes it as part of his seizure med combo Vet services wanted twice as much as Walmart.

We just had to put our 15 yr old Chiweenie down before going on a long international trip the last week of May. He had what I would call "roller coaster" dementia as he had good days and bad days that got progressively longer in duration to good weeks/bad weeks. He was deaf and almost blind, and in early stages of kidney failure. Last time we went on an extended vacation, he quit eating and lost about 1/5 of his body weight. Other than looking scrawny, he was otherwise heathy looking and appeared his normal self and jumped and hopped for treats. Over the past few months he suddenly started relieving himself in the house, had trouble negotiating the doggy door to go outside, and when he did go out, he would barely venture into the grass. One of his favorite things used to be sunning himself in the grass or on the patio furniture, but he stopped that many months ago for some reason. He would yelp if anyone touched him suddenly, like it startled him, and likely had arthritis pain. A lot of tough discussions with the family before we came to the conclusion that he likely wouldn't survive us being gone for two weeks, or if he did, he wouldn't be the same and it would only accelerate his decline. Such a brutal decision, but it had to be done. My youngest daughter is 18 and was very attached, and this was her first true death of a close family member to deal with.
I pray your dog gets better, but hearing what you are dealing with it sounds like you are unfortunately postponing the inevitable. We felt more frustration and anger than joy towards our dog during the last month and knew it wasn't fair to him or us, and didn't want to tarnish the good memories we had of him growing up with our family. It's guy wrenching when it's time to make that call. God bless.
