This is a Killdeer egg. What kind of Momma would lay an egg in the middle of a Caliche driveway? Just saddens me how bad some birds are.

I currently have bird nests behind my truck grill next to the radiator (for 3rd year), in several plants and pots around the yard, and in trees. Most of the tree-based nests are toast from predators. The truck nest has 0% chance of surviving eggs. Not sure about all the pots, but one clutch survived. Ingenious flying dinosaurs.

What kind? A killdeer. That's just what they do.

Killdeer make their nests in wide open spaces - usually in gravel or rocky areas. I wouldn't really call it a nest. We had tons of them when I was a kid - our land was old oil wells where they had pumped in salt water to get more of the oil. Made the land worthless (why we owned it) - couldn't also grow anything - was a ton of sand. Perfect for killdeer. We raised several generations of them or would put abandoned eggs in other bird's nests. Cool birds; I of course did my first wildlife paper at A&M on them.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Back when I was raising cotton in Hale County, they loved to nest on top of the bare listed rows in the spring. The bed roller/planter would smash the eggs, so I often got off and moved them. I would usually get the whole 'my wing is broken' show, which was entertaining.

My kid's were watching a nest in the middle of the driveway the last couple of weeks. I marked it off so no one would run it over. One day I saw all four eggs in there and an hour later they were completely gone. No broken eggshells, middle of the afternoon. I guess a snake got them? Not sure what else would have eaten them whole in the daytime.

Farmkid 101. Don't let Dad catch you stopping the tractor/buggy/combine/picker because you go suckered into the 'my wing is broken' show. Advance lectures include details of why it is not wise to chase the badger and little bunnies will in fact bite.

Never got bit by one, though at least one had fleas.

I did run down and catch a coyote pup once.

It was the classic, "Now, what?" scenario.

At least she remembered where the first one was.
