Anyone seen this type of hunting? I'm not sure how effective it is, especially compared to traps, but sounds like a good time.

Love the name!

Speaking of new methods to kill pigs, anyone ever deploy warfarin? Seemed to have some promise but I haven't talked to anyone that has used it.

Pigs aren't totally dumb. Wonder how long it will take them to learn to ostracize the pig with a big ass collar around its neck.

I may have missed it, but am wondering what sex is recommended for tagging. I would think tagging a sow would be much more efficient as one rarely sees a lone sow. They almost always are with a sounder. Adult boars on the other hand can remain alone for long stretches of time and are often not found in a sounder. After hunting and observing hogs all my life both in the hill country and east Tx, as well as south La, this seems to be true regardless of habitat. I believe adult boars only run with a sounder when a sow is in heat and then revert back to a sole existence, sometime in small bachelor groups. So in my opinion, a sow would make for a much better judas.

I had the same thoughts, because once a boar reaches a certain size (probably 120-150+), they tend to be loaners in my personal observations - less when looking for love. In the article it said 60-90lb sows/boars were used but I imagine the sows are the better option.

Quote:

When a sounder of hogs is caught, she identifies a potential Judasmale or female sub adult between 60 and 90 poundsto fit with a GPS collar.

This.

A lot of boars get cagey as hell and noctournal. Some "pig" that was easy to catch isn't going to be hanging out with them.

But I could see this working on larger groups of sows/piglets etc.

The theory is a boar will smell when a female is in heat and track them down. Then you hunt the sounder while leaving Judas alive to find the next female in heat.

Now how do you know when the female is found I'm not sure

Can we get the Israelis to put in some semtex in the collar and just blow up the sounder while sleeping? So many possibilities

First heard about this from Steve Rinella, except it was "Judas Goats" on islands where they are a problem. They'll trap and tag one, then hunt the pack with helicopters. I want to say it was New Zealand?

We had (though never heard the name) a pair of Judas goats at the old sale barn. Two big A-hole goats that lambs would follow from the chutes to the arena. If the lambs/sheep needed to be separated, one would hold the others back while the others went away. I was little and thought it was the coolest thing ever.
