This may be a hare brained idea, so don't hesitate to tell me so.

But what do y'all think of using a water gun to apply fly repellent to cattle? Anyone do anything like that? In the past we've used a paintball type gun with fly repellent in the balls, but it's not the most convenient. I wondered about a simple water gun off Amazon that has some range to it and use that to "shoot" the cows.

It would be on a few smaller herds of 20 or so cows, and often checked on an atv/utv,

I don't know any reason why it wouldn't work fine for a small herd like that. Just a lot of reloading.

Have seen people do it on instagram. So yes, looks like it works. Or use a pump sprayer if you can get close enough.

Why not a pump up sprayer? You can hold a lot more liquid

A basic 15 gallon sprayer often works for us, and the components are more likely to withstand the chemical mix.
Range is decent, again, likely better than a water gun.
Or...
I have this 3 gallon backback sprayer, I use around the house. Good psi and reach, several nozzles.

Bought a new 26 gallon tank/ sprayer complete at northern tool a month ago to replace an old one. We used it this week to spray all cattle for flies and ear ticks. The quart bottle of chemical mixes to 25 gallons of water so it's the perfect size for us. And the sprayer is good for spraying fence lines from the utv. Using a small 12v lawnmower battery to power the sprayer.

Most cattle sprays say to wet the skin and not just wet the hair so I want to run them thru the corrall 4 or so at a time, wetting the ears and back line.
We have used different sized sprayers over the years from one gallon to big 3pt hitch mounted sprayers and the 26 gallon size I prefer to put in an atv and still be able to move it around by hand or drive beside the chute and leave it in the utv.

We use cheap Amazon super soakers and they work great. Funny as hell watching my FIL blasting the cows and horses.

Make sure to wear gloves qnd keep out of kids hands.

I have a battery pack back pack sprayer that holds 2 gallons. I use it only to spray for flies on cattle. Works great!

We are using a 4 gallon Dewalt backpack sprayer that runs off a 20V battery. Works great.

You aren't going to get much range with a backpack sprayer, maybe 4-5'

I am standing in a 10'x10' pen to spray my sheep, just soaking them after I get a pen full and then loading the pen again.

My buddy that is using a backpack sprayer for his cows is running his cows down an alley that leads to his chute. He puts em in there nose to tail in that alley and gets them on both sides then loads alley again.

The fly sprays I use will ruin a pressure sprayer in about 6 months, so I buy the 1 gallon ones for our horses and toss them when they get to where they don't work well. So, make sure whatever you use is rated as such. Typically VIton seals and rings. If not, buy cheap and toss them.

Saw a reel with a guy using one of the battery powered ones to apply some kind of treatment. The guns are about $100 bucks but spray a fairly concentrated blast about 20-30 feet.

The pressure is adjustable on the one I posted, at max it easily does 18-20 ft, for a stream. Set for more of a shower, maybe 15 ft.
It uses a DeWalt clone battery.
