I've been before and honestly it wasn't that insane. However I didn't go last year, and anytime I drove by it, seems like the line of cars was ridiculous.

Anyone have any recommendations on when to go and "how" to do Santa's Wonderland? we bought the fast pass before for the hay ride which will do again, but what else is needed for a good experience?

TIA

(if helpful this is for taking a 4 year old)

Go during the week (Mon-Wed) and get there early. Do the stuff that doesn't need to be dark for first, Santa Pictures, sno ball fights, petting zoo, etc., then go do the hay ride as it starts to get dark before the lines get too long.

The earlier in the season, the better as well!

Was going to suggest this. We tried the weekend once and I'll never do that again.

As previously mentioned, go during the week, try and arrive closer to 5-5:30 and get in line for entrance at 6PM. We go straight to the hayride as it's already dark by 6PM when they open. After that, fill in the blank with whatever you want. You don't need a fastpass for the early hayride.

If you're trying to get a photo with Santa as well you may choose to make that your priority at entry and then hustle over to the hayride. Santa's line gets pretty heavy on it's own. Have fun!

And just FYI, there's no shuttle from the mall parking lot this year.

Most importantly bring money. They had a forklift last year to help.

Bingo. They also have a short term lender on site. And don't forget to bundle up and sit next to the fire to get some relief from these north pole temps we've been having.

I'm curious to see how they'll use the old jockey lot. They've been working non stop on it and it looks great. This week, they have been making driveways. I'm thinking parking and shuttling over. We'll see.

According to a Rusty post on FB, there will be no more free shuttles from the mall but you can park at the Jocky Lot and pay to take a shuttle across the street.

Betting we have at least 1 frogger death this year from someone trying cross on foot.

I think they are hurting financially. They used to do the one-day "Christmas in July" sale with half-off tickets. That sale lasted almost 2 months this year. We bought our tickets in July during the original sale, then I got an email that it had been extended for a couple of days, then another couple of days, then a week, then another week. Next thing you know, it's September.

Probably a combination of everything at Santa's Wonderland being overpriced and people feeling the squeeze right now in this economy.

The sale also provides cash flow during the slow time of year.

Bumping this thread because I'm a first timer (at least first time since it was just like a field of lights you drove through when I was in college... We're taking our three kids (2, 2, 4, lord help us)

Bought the earliest time slot parking we could, parking in the Blitzen lot, going to head that way a bit before 5.

I read the advice about doing the snow stuff first, then the hayride, but any other advice out there? Best food? Things your little kids loved to do? etc?

If they are hurting financially...just ask the city of CS for more money!
They have given them a bunch previously.

In all seriousness, I doubt they are hurting financially.

We went for the first time last year. We actually went two days after Christmas. We got there right when they opened and went straight for the hayride. We had to wait about 30 minutes until they opened it up.

Our almost 2 year old loved the hayride and all the lights. I remember all the food was decent, but nothing particular stands out.

We had a good time overall and will definitely go back this year.

Even if, hypothetically they were, they have some great land to sell one day. $$$

I'd try the Tree farm instead as the price is significantly cheaper and likely less crowded especially during the week.

Timely thread. Was considering making the trek to do this with my kids but the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

I have never been, but from the website, the tree farm looks like the Temu version of Santa's Wonderland. I guess you get what you pay for.

The tree farm is basically what Santa's wonderland was back in 1998. Its a crap ton of lights that you can drive your own car through at an affordable price. Each place fills its own niche/price bracket.

There are many of us who don't want or need to have the $$$$$ visit to Santa's Wonderland.

A drive thru like the Tree Farm is fine for me and my family.

We went last week and it was the slowest I've ever seen it but they were still busy. The workers just said it's usually like that during the week until school gets out. We also go early because of younger kids. We get there about 445 and do all of the things we want to do that doesn't include lights as well as eat. Then when it gets dark we go do the hayride first then walk around for the rest of the night. We waited maybe 10-15 for the hayride.

I have a coworker who works out there and knows some of the numbers. They are not hurting for money. I think there's something like 1500 employees this year.

It will probably start being a little slower now that the kids are heading out this week.

If you've ever been to Disney, it's similar in prices but not in ROI. Not sure anything compares to it in Texas though. Maybe the Gaylord area in Dallas. I'd say the Grapevine area is more expensive though.

I think it actually starts to pickup now that the students leave because now all of the ISDs will be getting out soon and everyday is on the table, so essentially they all kind of become 'weekend days' so to speak because schedules become a little more open.

I guess we don't see it as expensive as most do. But we also plan for it every year. We buy the tickets in July, so they are half price. Sometimes we eat there. Sometimes we don't. Parking is like $20 or $25. Hot chocolate is like $4-$6. Other than that we don't buy a whole lot of stuff. Once you buy something/souvenier the first time, not sure how much you will need after that. But we've been going ever since you could drive through it back in the day

Yes, some people do come in from out of town and maybe have those expenses added on, but that would be something you should hopefully plan for.

Wanted to follow up and say I was extremely impressed with the place and how everything ran. I'm not sure what I was expecting overall but I was expecting the whole thing to feel like a racket that's just trying to squeeze as much money out of you as possible, but I definitely didn't have that feeling. Just some quick thoughts for those maybe on the fence, keep in mind this was a Tuesday, I'm sure the place is absolutely bonkers on the weekend:
  • The ticket included everything we wanted to do. We were there over three hours and didn't pay extra for anything.
  • I was really impressed by the food options and the prices weren't as bad as I expected. I'd say most of it was pretty decently priced, especially compared to like an A&M sporting event. It's not the best food in the world obviously, but it was pretty good. We had the pizza and then some onion rings. There were absolutely tons of options though.
  • We took our toddlers (2 year old twins) and that was probably a mistake, but the four year old absolutely loved it. If we were doing it again we'd probably have gotten someone to watch the littles at home. They still had some fun, they liked the hayride with the lights and stuff, but it probably wasn't worth it for them because:
  • This place is way bigger than I thought. I thought it was going to be like a go on the hayride, do the snow mountain, and then that's basically it, but no. We had to practically bribe the four year told to leave the snow playground, and we didn't even do the walk through light trail or go in any of the shops.
  • The staff were really great and the attention to detail was really nice. Everything was really clean, they were cleaning off tables as soon as people left, etc.
  • There were several areas to just kind of chill out, which is nice if you have kids. They can get too wound up and you just need a place to relax, maybe have a snack, whatever, and there were a lot of options. The little ones were struggling at one point so I took them down by the fire in the middle and they had fun just hanging by the fire and watching the house band (surprisingly good!)

My only complaint is the process getting in. If they're going to open the parking lots at 5 but not let people start actually getting in until 6, which causes a massive line out front, they should consider maybe roping off part of the park and letting people go ahead and scan their tickets to get in and wait there. This might have been in part because it was fairly cold and very windy yesterday, but most of the children in the line out front were about to riot by 6. Would have been nice to have a place to sit down and maybe go ahead and give the kids a snack or whatever. I assume and understand that staffing is probably the major hurdle here, but this is the only thing we encountered that I would really try and find a way to improve.

But again, overall I was extremely impressed, we didn't spend an absolute ton of money or anything (granted I'm sure if you're shopping there you can rack up a bill in a hurry), it was incredibly fun, everything was really well done. We'll definitely be going back next year and will probably leave our twins at home for one more year.

This is a good place to go for a fraction of the price.

Our family of 6 just got home from driving thru the tree farm. Total cost was $32.37.

It was nicely decorated and we enjoyed it.

As someone who does both Santa's Wonderland and the tree farm…it's not really an apples to apples comparison. Both are great for what they are.

Now living down the road and passing by every time we go out of town, we finally visited the tree farm. Having 3 kids 4,2, 6 months, it was not an easy task at santas wonderland with all the crowds. However at the tree farm the kids had a blast doing all the activities and could run around without us having to "hover". Really brought back the old feel that santas wonderland once had back in the day. Will definitely go back next year and will prolly skip on santas wonderland.

If I have friends who want to get dropped off versus parking - this is a viable option? What entrance to drop off is so?

It will be damn hard to pick them up when traffic is backed up for miles.
