Howdy!

I'm about this close to dropping DTV and am curious what stations can be accessed with an over the air antenna here in town. I live south of CS near tower point.

I am most interested in whether you can get an NBC affiliate here in town. It looks like the nearest is KCEN out of Temple. Seems like the other networks are transmitting locally.

Thanks.

Is your antenna external, like outside the house, or set up inside the house next to you tv?

The Waco NBC affiliate has a low power transmitter in Bryan. Your going to have the best luck with an outdoor antenna but I do get all of the locals at my house in mid Bryan with an indoor antenna in the window.

NBC is KAGS here on 23.1. You can get all the networks plus subchannels with a decent antenna. ABC 40.1 is the only one with a really weak signal. And KAGS just stops transmitting periodically for some reason.

KBTX ( CBS) transmitter is near Carlos in Grimes County only a few miles from you.

I put an antenna in the attic for backup if the internet goes down.
I get a clear signal and am much further away.
I get other stations, when I get back home I'll check which ones are NBC.

I use Tablo which allows you to record over the air. Here is a list of available channels from south College Station.

With decent outdoor antenna you should have no problem getting those networks. I use a cheap over the air antenna for tailgating on get all of them and a couple low power TV stations in town. KBTX is in Carlos. Fox and ABC are same tower on 2818 in North Bryan. NBC is on 6 near Benchley. The power stations are near Harvey. They cover most of BCS pretty well. One of them has something like 20 standard definition channels. Mostly old tv shows and a couple of western channels. Since it didn't have ball games I haven't checked it it more than once my initial channel scan but for home use may be worth checking

Mostly correct, except you have NBC & ABC swapped. ABC is in Benchley and NBC is lower down the Fox tower. Also PBS is on VHF channel 12 in Hensel Park near campus, but you can probably receive it with UHF-only antennas if you're reasonably close.

When they "repacked" the channels a couple of years ago, ABC moved from 40 to 15 and the reception noticeably improved. NBC is the weakest signal for me nowadays. It's usually good but occasionally disappears. I may need to try an LTE-blocking lowpass filter. (There are now 5G/LTE signals using the 600-850MHz range which was formerly part of the UHF broadcast band, and they can overwhelm TV reception.)
