Many already know this but, hay is your friend. If you have vegetable seedlings or even survivor tomatoes (I do), various plants you want to protect, head up to Producers and grab some coastal hay, and lay a good amount of it on your plants prior to then adding frost clothes, blankets etc. This saved my garden during Uri and had not failed me since. Happy gardening.

Weirdly some of my tropicals did survive the last blast, but most of mine are in pots for this reason. Focusing on the food garden that's been feeding me well for awhile. That's priority number 1.

mine are tropical carnivorous pitcher plants.
I have a couple of large round bales in my former pasture if you want some for free but you will have to extract and package to haul. Its a couple years old so I wont feed it but for insulation its fine. Have a bale cart you might be able to get a whole one if close by but I don't have a tractor here. Meteorology pals say temps will really crash Tuesday night Wednesday morning. Single digit lows now possible. If you haven't protected and moved your important plants, do so tomorrow, and do all the obvious faucet prep.
Very Good for insulating, maybe not so good to leave as a mulch.
A lot of improved Bermuda hay is treated with combinations of herbicides ( 2,4-D, Banvel, Picloram, etc) that are residual in the hay.
Residual Picloram has a long documented history on this issue.
That can affect sensitive broadleaf crops like tomatoes and can affect vigor of larger plants.
I grew my own round bales and would use tractor to push up residual hay and manure into huge compost piles.
Only made the mistake once of using it in my garden on tomatoes .

I had an acquaintance show up unannounced a couple of years ago and ask if I would sell him a couple of square bales for mulch. It had been either treated with GrazonNext or Cimarron so I told him it would hurt his broadleaf garden plants. He didn't believe me and stormed off.

Another point is to make sure the soil around your plant roots has moisture. Roots in dry soil are much more damaged by cold weather than in wet soil.
I have some large sago palms that I have wrapped in the past. Thoughts if that will be needed this time..

Very interesting, did not know about the mulch. I only have used the coastal hay from Producers and never any issues as mulch, except it annoyingly often has grass/hay seedlings sprout where it has been laid down.
It will be 15 degrees or colder Mon night to Tues morning. Every tropical plant is in severe danger.
