The school districts are dead set treating kids like snowflakes (a little pun intended).
It's absolutely ridiculous that they canceled school again today. Canceling school has a waterfall effect. Now businesses that have employees that have kids in school either have to close for the day so the employees that have kids can be at home to care for them or they work short handed.
It seems like my kids spend more time not going to school any more with all the holidays, spring (and now fall break), full week off for Thanksgiving.

We basically have the same reaction when a student misses class for that random exorbitant cruise, trip to Disney World, or 47th annual family reunion in BFE that for some reason couldn't be scheduled in the summer time, but just had to be taken during the school year because it was planned well in advance and cost and arm and a leg. Give me a break.

I mean everyone knows school is essentially August-May, Thanksgiving holiday, Christmas break, spring break, etc. Those calendars are put out MONTHS in advance so it's not a surprise.
BUT, little Bobby has to miss a week of school to go to a "family reunion" or a birthday party weekend or any other ridiculous thing, even when the school calendar was known before those trips were scheduled. I guess school doesn't matter then.

Let me guess, you work in an office with 50 people, MAX. Yet, a decision was made that affected 15,000 students and district employees in Bryan ISD only, and though it looks like a different decision could've been made, a decision was made in enough advance to allow those 15,000 people to prepare.
The school business starts at 5 AM when buses pull out, so they don't get the luxury of waiting until 7:30 and being in at work at 8. They are two different things.
Yes, the weather report said one thing, there were a multitude of things involved in the decision. They would've been wrong one way or the other. A call was made, and god forbid it was made the wrong decision then you're putting peoples lives in jeopardy, but for the once or twice a year this happens in Texas, everyone wants to crucify the decision. It's dumb.
The call for no school today was made AFTER the weather report had clearly missed and roads were very much proven to perfectly fine, the sun had been out drying for hours and all snow was already melted. There was zero chance of more rain after the system had moved through.

KBTX published an article today at 11:25 that specifically said "Brazos Valley roads clear in most areas, icy spots remain a concern in less traveled spots". That was TODAY, and those less traveled spots have kids that go to Bryan ISD. BISD and CSISD can't afford to have low attendance numbers.
One of the school board members stated in another article today "there are lots of children who walk to school". These are young children as well AND not all kids ride the bus or get dropped off at school by their parents. It was below freezing this morning.
Combine those two things and you can understand why a decision was made. BUT, it put some people out in having to take care of their kids instead and so a certain population is pissed. I'm going to guess you may be one of those people. And that's fine, be mad, but it doesn't mean it was a bad decision either. In hindsight, you can make that argument, no doubt. But the decision was made yesterday with the best of intentions.

It will be a hard freeze again tonight. So why wasn't school cancelled again?
There's a school board meeting on Monday according to the Bryan ISD website. Go spend your 15 minutes voicing y'all's concerns there. But, no one will, people just want to armchair quarterback.
It's going to be cold again tomorrow morning for the children walking or waiting on buses cancel again tomorrow muh cold. Anything below freezing to cold? No kids don't matter at 30 but 24 is too freezing and a ten am start same temperature as this morning out of the question
Ridiculous argument that schools needed to be canceled again today. There wasn't a slick, wet road remaining in the county yesterday afternoon when the decision was made. So a small percentage of kids might have to walk to school in the cold or maybe their parents find an alternative for them? Instead we're going to keep all 15,000 home and force way more parents to have to figure what to do about their kids. Stay home and lose money on their paycheck or spend money for a babysitter. All the while the kids that need to be educated get yet another day off to go with the Ridiculous amount that is already built into school calendar.

Are you upset about kids missing educational time or the district messing up your child care plans? It is hard to tell from your post.
My kids are old enough we can leave them home without issue. I do however have several employees that don't have that option.
I also want my kids in school learning. I interview these young kids just a few years out of highschool and am amazed at their academic deficiencies. Poor grammar, poor communication and taught to pass a STAR TEST instead of learning how to apply what they're being taught.
I ride my kids constantly about school, making good grades and using it as a stepping stone to the next chapter of their lives. When the district schedules so many breaks during the school year and takes opportunities to cancel classes with such ease as yesterday, it makes it seem like the district doesn't care as much about educating their students. It's also not realistic for when these kids eventually get to the real world. Outside of academia, the majority of the rest of us are expected to go to work even through a little cold and we sure don't get all the days off throughout the year except for a few government jobs that may have similar work schedules.

It's a bit of a rant, yes. Maybe some of the school board or district admins see this and think about it differently next time.

My guess is that waterfall effect goes both ways. When one district cancels, it effects the teachers, staff and students at the one next door and so on and so on.

Do you realize that almost all school districts build in extra days in the schedule beyond the state requirements in anticipation of these situations?

Common sense would have been to have delayed openings. Kids can't afford to be missing anymore school.
Gibby - I'm also certain in addition to the entitlement part that BillDean, Bunk, and the like on the thread have no qualms about volunteering their time at 4:30 am to drive the roads to provide their expertise to our two school district personnel. Need to make sure we bookmark this thread.

Homeschool...snow days are not an issue AND you can have your family reunion whenver you want.
You also have noone to blame but yourself if your kid has poor grammar or can't spell. Upside... no STAR testing so you can actually teach your kids stuff that actually matters.
We also didn't cancel classes or wear masks "in school" during COVID so there is that....

Which is great. Congratulations. But many families are not in a position to be able to homeschool their children. But thanks for sharing.

The state requires a certain number of school days for students per year. What districts do is schedule that number of days for students PLUS a few extra days in case there are closures for weather or other issues.

Several years ago, the requirement was changed to minutes instead of days.

It's actually 75,600 minutes, of "class time". With the mandated "no earlier than" Aug start date, and still ending in May.... PLUS the added holidays that did not exist just a few decades ago... you would think there's not much wiggle room.... but there always is.
