The farm patch tomototes are just so healthy looking this year

I am probably gonna regret this early planting but we will see

I was wondering about your garden when I was up last night.

That's crummy.

About half of mine had the growth tips broken off. Will they shoot out new growth ends or replant?

If the top is broken I am replanting I lost probably 70-80 tomotoe plants
48. Romaine small head beat to nothing but may come back

Onions. Doing so well but all the greens have holes all thru them but I think they will eventually be okay

I had little blooms that were getting close

Also CS. I am not for sure on the replanting As I was looking at mine and the past experience the suckers will grow up high just like the plant

I am gonna leave some in the ground and kust plant beside them to see what happens

T&P, ugh. I hope you recover enough to make some money off them later.

Damn. I just sent you a PM asking about the garden. I didn't see this post. My apologies. Sorry to hear about that but for what it's worth, I have had hail beaten plants survive and do OK. Usually my hail come send of March or April about the time my corn and squash start looking like something in a magazine and then it gets toasted.

Mine are all fruiting like that too. Except the Brandywine, which remains elusive.

Grew out a couple seedlings from those wonderful oxheart tomatoes that the Wolff Farms guy sells, and I have high hopes for them.

I have a 125 and I transplanted 1/2 of the hail storm ones to see if they will grow after ca78 asked and I will take pics of themnin a week or two

So basically 150 or so tomotoe plants but not all are doing that well

Here is my somewhat write up of tomotoes

This picture is of the plant that the top of the plant was broken off because of hail

I pulled up and replanted

So here is what I think

You see big plants at lowes and think oh wow that will produce faster because it is bigger and as you can tell that is somewhat false

Also. I assume if you want to leave plants in the ground that have been beaten by a hail storm it is okay

The plants may not ever get to full height like they are suppose to but we will see in june with another picture

My conclusion is the plants know when to put on tomotoes and it does not matter how big or small when you plant

Maybe the roots have to get to a certain size

Looking good. For the most part, you can't tell that mine got beat up by hail. I had one that probably should have been pulled. Was pretty much just a broken stem and one leaf. Its doing well but is definitely behind the others.

I get bored and have to try different stuff. "Midnight snack" cherry tomatoes.

the best of that size I have had was Black Cherry variety. They look similar.

Maddiedou,

You obviously have made an investment in wire for cages and they have been successful for you. I was looking at alternatives this year after having done a version of the "California Weave" trellising. I decided to try trellising on twine using clips.
If you haven't seen this process it involves running 10' sticks of 1" electric conduit between tposts through PVC fittings and then dropping twine to the plant and using clips to keep the plants growing up the twine. It is recommended to use at least 7' tposts because the plants will grow that tall up the twine. Improves air flow and sunlight to the fruit.

Have you seen this? What are your thoughts?

Mine look very promising at this point. I only have 20 plants, but it allows you to grow them closer together. Indeterminate varieties are kept trimmed to one main vine. Determinate to semi-determinate(like Celebrity) use two strings - or more - can run each stem up a separate twine.

Also, there seems to be some debate about pruning the crotches and stopping the forming of more main stems. I settled on letting the Celebrity form 2 main stems for possibly more production and keeping the other varieties to one main stem.

Thoughts?

I tried that method last year and found it to be a PITA. The cages are the best method in my opinion. You just have to make sure that the openings of the cage are big enough so you can easily get your hands in there to prune and pick. Madman looks to have good spacing, probably 4-6" per square.

I grew up with my dad who staked his tomotoes and I always said even in the 70s that if I had a garden I was gonna figure something better out and I did. By the way Dadwho is 94 this year still has a garden but in containers

Anyway my cages are 6x6wire concrete mesh and they work perfect for me I have learned over the years that I also have to use tpost with a rope thru cages and tpost

Because as tomatoes get taller wind will knock them down

Also my cages work if you have room and out of site to store them
Or a wife that really dont care because she knows who she married

Last comment. Most of my cages are 15 plus years

But if you decide to make them. I can tell you how to make them

Just killed a bunch of green hornworms on my plants. With the rain and the damage they did to my crop, I may not yield very much before it gets too hot.

Ugh yeah the coming heat. Switching to only cherry tomatoes then on the hopes that I may still get a few.
