Ours have slowed on ripening the last week but I was ready for it. This past week have canned 21 quarts of tomato juice and that is a lot of standing. My back doesn't appreciate it.

I probably have somewhere between 700 and 1000 tomatoes maybe even more and there are some that have been the same size for three weeks or so it seems I know I said earlier that last year it was June 11 so I guess we'll see

My tomatoes have stopped turning completely. I pulled my 7 Celebrity Plus plants and have 150 -200 green tomatoes that will ripen slowly indoors. I believe they stopped ripening because the overnight temperatures are in the upper 70s and they are not getting enough cooling time.

I have seen exactly the opposite the last week or so. I picked 2 gallons last night and took every one that were red or had at least 1/2 red on them. This morning there were at least 20 tomatoes that had added significant color and more this evening.
May be variety related but I have Cherokee Purple ( the king of flavor), Black Krim, Celebrity +, Rutgers, Creole and San Marzano (which I will never plant again). Plus some more that I can't remember and forgot where I put my list/sketch.

What is wrong with the san marzanos

So far, low production for how many make a pound. They aren't a flavorful fruit and I just decided to use them along with the others to make tomato juice. I don't even think if you dehydrated them that they would be any good.
My 3 Beefsteak plants have outproduced the 5 San Marzanos by a factor of 5 at least.

I've had bad luck with San Marzanos. Still haven't found a good tasting paste tomato with high production.

Currently growing seedlings from the Hungarian oxheart l bought from Wolff Farms (POM farm market) and cautiously optimistic for a fall crop. His tomatoes have game changed my sauce making.

Well if my other three plants would have not been destroyed bybhail They produce pretty decent but I would think you need 12-18 plants to get moving on sauce

They turn like cherry or romas

How many san marzanos do you need to make tomotoe paste
I will give them to you for free so you can try and let me know

The only reason I do not want to sell a tomotoe if nobody can do anything with it and I dont want to plant it either and take ip space

If you are growing seedlings from seeds from a tomato might want to make sure it isn't a Hybrid. I think Wolff uses Cauralina (from Johnny's seeds) which is an F1 hybrid which means it won't breed true if you use seeds from it. Just an FYI. I couldn't get any for my greenhouse tomatoes and went with a different oxheart variety from another company and it was a major fail. Going to order from Johnny's this year early while they still have seed.
Those seeds aren't cheap either. 15 seeds for $13.75.

I'm good, thanks. I have 5 quarts of sauce made from the Wolff Farms tomatoes, and funny, I found a San Marzano in one of my many grow bags that is actually loaded with tomatoes right now! Hoping this rain and cool down extends the season a bit longer.

Oh I had no idea. The guy who actually grew out the seedlings works in AgLife and his specialty is actually plant genetics so I'm going to run this by him.

The plant I have is definitely an oxheart type, because it has that "wispy foliage" look common to that type.

A nice surprise was the Stupice, a tough little Czechoslovak tomato, has been putting out new fruit in the heat. Never grew this one before.

Haven't heard of Stupice, might look into it for next year. I wonder if the guy you are talking about is the plant breeder I know. I usually get his HT1 seeds from him. I don't think that variety his is working on has been released yet.

Different dude I think. He grew the seedlings from one of Wolff's oxheart tomatoes that I gave him.

Maddiedou,

Glad to see you're having a good year! Mine is the opposite of yours. I just started getting ripe tomatoes a little over a week ago.

San Marzanos are going crazy. The tomatoes are twice the size of years past.

Celebrities are good size this year but just started turning. I left some when I picked Tuesday. By last night they had all split. Probably threw 30 - 40# to the deer. If I wasn't running plastic it would have probably been even worse.

What are you getting for yours this year? Was at farmer's market a couple weekends ago. Several people were selling celebrity sized tomatoes for $1 each and selling out! I had no idea they were bringing that much now.

If you have been following I was complaining about not turning also and then June 11 I amnpicking like crazy

Good tomotoes are I guess like everything else
We have a window and it starts may31-june 30 and its over I dont know why HEB or whoever can never have good tomotoes but it is a short window for us that sells and the time I spend its definitely a hobby not a business

I lost 80 plants drom hail before it even got started and like you from the rains threw away a bunch of tomotoes

I went back and re-read some of your earlier posts. The first time I skimmed through, I missed the fact some of the earlier pics were from last year.

I did about the same number of plants this year as I had when you came over a couple years ago. I gave up the weave for cages this year and planted in 2 half row blocks instead of 1 long row of each variety. It's better but I have some ideas for changes next year.
maddiedou

I plant 3 feet apart and my next row is 4-5 feet apart

I am a heavy pruner

But thats just me. There is no exact science ezcept to much rain and 100 degree temps are never good
