Why can't the county buy the Macy's building....it in Brazos County.

Bryan is county seat. If they moved the county seat to College Station you would never hear the end of it.

No place to put it in College Station. CS is fast running out of room for new development with no options. The jail and the juvenile facilities are situated on a large tract in west Bryan. They would probably put it out there. The jail is still fairly new. Can't have the jail separated from the courthouse by miles.

Jails are separated from the courthouse by miles in other counties. This isn't new.

Looks to me that you could add a two or three story addition to the existing court house on the SW side and add as much or more square footage as the new building will give you and then if omre parking is needed eventually, add additional parking on the east side.

If you made the courthouse building into a full rectangle, you would add about 9,500 square feet of indoor area per floor on its SW corner.

What is the square footage of the newly proposed building?

BTW, the project cost is $61 million.

I'm pretty sure the $55M number isn't just for the skywalk.
Exactly.

It seemed excessive to me at first also, thinking it was just for comfort. But evidently, there is currently an issue where judges and prosecutors don't have a very safe parking situation, so it's leading to extra security legwork. The skybridge also solves that issue long term.

There is actually a LOT of underutilized land around the courthouse, in all directions. If (and this is a big "if") the county commissioners decided a whole new courthouse was needed, there would be plenty of places around there to build it.

To show all the land around the courthouse for building an expansion.

That isn't necessarily the area I was referring to. Was referring to the downtown area at large. Particularly land to the east (and somewhat south) of the current courthouse.

I think it is implied in the stated use, that a direct connection to reduce prisoner/witness tranfers to and from the courts is necessary. Therefore, any of thos areas, of which I still do not see, are applicable...?

I was talking about a future (maybe never) complete reconstruction of the courthouse facility. Currently, things are divided between the courthouse proper, administration building annex, and eventually the across-the-street annex. IF the powers that be deem it necessary, there's plenty of land downtown on which a new facility could be built. I may never live to see that, which is fine.

On a different (but related) note, there is also a lot of land directly to the east of the plot where the newest annex is planned to be built. Currently there are a couple old (historic?) buildings on it and nothing else. I have no idea if the county even owns it, but it's mostly a large, empty lot.

Oh, and no offense taken at all. ;-)

Can we get a courthouse that doesn't look like we stole the blueprints from 1960's USSR?

Comrade Duane forbids it.
