A name is on the horizon for the Bryan Baseball Franchise of the Mid-America League.
Wednesday, the league that's set to take over Travis Field next summer, replacing the Brazos Valley Bombers, announced the six finalists in its "Name the Team" contest.
Mid-America League said the finalists reflect the city's deep history, culture and character. The names are as follows:
  • Bryan Yard Dogs Tough, loyal, and built for hard work. This name captures the gritty, blue-collar energy of Bryan's rail yards and work crews that helped shape the community.
  • Bryan Iron Horses A tribute to the locomotives that connected Texas towns and powered progress across the region. Strong, fast, and unstoppablejust like the team it represents.
  • Bryan Rail Runners Inspired by the trains that have long run through the Brazos Valley, this name combines speed and precision with the hometown rhythm of the rails.
  • Bryan Gandy Dancers A historic nod to the rail workers who laid the tracks that built America. Named after the rhythmic "gandy dancers" who worked in unison to keep the lines true and the trains rolling.
  • Bryan Yodel Dogs A fun, Texas-flavored twist inspired by the howls and harmonies of the coyotes that roam the Brazos Valley nights. Spirited, loud, and full of character, these "dogs" embody the wild energy and musical heart of Texas.
  • Bryan Yard Bulls A strong, bold name symbolizing power and determination, inspired by the iron bulls of the rail yards and the competitive spirit of Texas baseball.

I guess the Mayor vetoed the Bryan Woods.

Voted for Iron Horses but Yodel Dogs is fun in an absurd minor league baseball way.

They could talk to Josh Pate about licensing his Freights logo:

Not to be too rude but all of these teams, the logos look like they came from the same designer on Fiverr using a preexisting template.

They seem locked in to a Railroad Theme. I'm trying to figure out where the rail yard was in Bryan. Maybe they used AI and it thought they meant Hearne

Who is in their marketing? Do they not realize that there's no affinity for the railway in Bryan-College Station? It's annoying and in the way of everything.

Is Bryan, Texas a railroad town?
Quote:

Yes, Bryan, Texas is a railroad town, as it was founded and developed around the Houston and Texas Central (H&TC) Railroad in the mid-1800s. The town grew along the tracks, and its history is deeply intertwined with the railroad's arrival and presence.

  • Founding:
  • The city's existence began when the H&TC Railroad needed land for its route. William Joel Bryan, nephew of Stephen F. Austin, sold land to the railroad company in 1859, and the town was named in his honor.
  • Early growth:
  • The first train arrived in 1867, and the town quickly became an agricultural and commercial center, with its downtown area developing parallel to the railroad tracks.
  • Continued significance:
Even after the railroad's initial construction, another rail line, the International-Great Northern (I-GN), was built through the community in 1900, further solidifying its role as a transportation hub. The original H&TC tracks still run through the center of downtown Bryan today.

Fellow Bryanites* (Bryanians?), the time has come to embrace our Rail Road Roots!

*Including the surrounding suburbs like C-Stat, Mulligan, etc.

Half the cities and towns in Texas are "railroad" towns that grew up along the rails. I was hoping for something more unique like the Bombers' nod to the riverside flight school. Way fewer flight schools than railroad towns.

"Gandy Dancers" was a finalist? Yeesh, I'd hate to think of the ones that were left on the cutting room floor.

Bryan Brakeman... Historically the most dangerous job for a railway worker.
