Just a safety announcement and friendly PSA… CS city council to discuss lowering speed limits on the bypass to 60mph and the frontage road to 40-45mph. TxDOT sent a formal letter requesting this and I'm pretty sure it will pass soon.

Just a heads up. Watch for changing signage and be safe out there!

By "bypass", you of course mean Hwy6 between the Rock Prairie/Deacon area all the way north to about where 2818 intersects 6 on the north side of Bryan, correct?

Is this temporary* for the construction?

* I realize temporary is a relative term for the next decade

And here we go.

1. Put up construction signs and cut speed limits.
2. Write tickets for speeding in construction zone with added fees.
3. ????
4. Profit

Here's all the detail you can shake a stick at. Item 7.4, Page 121 of 346 in the recently posted agenda packet for an unusual Council Meeting this Monday due to Thanksgiving.

To the other poster, yes, both cities ultimately.
To the other poster, yes, temporary- but many years.
To the other poster, yes, the pain of progress begins.

Waste of energy.

The speeds will drop automatically due to the construction so you're wasting funds on signage that might be offset by fines, vut unlikely.

I can count the enforcement actions I've seen on that corridor in the last ten years on one hand.

Enforcement will go WAY up with all the potential revenue that comes with the changes.

I mean, enforcement of safety measures will increase.

Actually - yeah, they are going to be throwing tickets at us for years.

So Hwy 6 will be even more of a parking lot for the morning and evening rush hours. Fantastic.

Just so the illegal speed limits will be the same. Good news for some.

Is this a construction speed limit with temporary signs where fines double when workers are present, or just a reduced speed limit intended to be a temporary measure?

Would love to see some enforcement of riders in the left lane; especially with construction coming.

College Station has a lot of Left Lane riders who can't seem to look in mirrors or must be A holes.

This is why I said meh. It's 70.

How about a compromise: 60mph during the construction, then up to 75 when it's done!

All state and local laws and ordinances will apply- including moving violations in a construction zone, once marked with signage, my attorney tells me.

It'll be an adjustment for all of us to change our institutional behavior. That's why I made this post. Let's stay safe, be patient and just deal with it- that's my suggestion.

An interesting thought I keep coming back to- when this very modern highway is done, how will our community have changed along with it? Interesting to contemplate what the future holds.

Yep, lower speed limits/construction will lead to increased congestion both on the freeway (SH 6) and roads that people will take to avoid the freeway.

Question: Will TAMU stagger start times (and quitting times) to help reduce congestion at peak hours?

The project has really started with:
  • a roadbase prepared on the west side of SH6 between the freeway and frontage road just south of the Harvey Rd bridge; and,
  • the construction of what looks like a miniature cement/concrete plant beside the frontage road on SH 6 just north of Harvey Mitchell Parkway South.
I think they are moving fast. Seems like yesterday I was still in mourning over the loss of the bulldozed trees.....

Start times for classes are already staggered for main campus and west campus to allow students the time to get from one to the other

We're likely looking at years of lower speed. Maybe we'll have flying cars by the time they're done.

It just means people will drive 70 to 75 mph rather than 80 to 85 mph,

We will see the # of serious injury accidents go down greatly,

The city should station two police cars on the stretch of roadway at all times, Fund the budget and reduce property taxes!!!

As a person who had a good friend who worked on a roadway construction site and got killed by a speeding driver, I am all for safety, People can get home or destination 5 to 10 minutes later than normal and still continue their life,

Lower speed limits don't stop wrecks. Look at the OSR where it's 60 all the way. It's arguably more dangerous at that lower speed limit because people are always going faster and running up against slower traffic.

Just the other day two wrecks happened the same morning out there. The second one was a cop passing two slower cars going the speed limit and they hit another car going in the opposite direction head on.

I wouldn't be surprised if the number of accidents goes up on the bypass during this time.

You are comparing OSR to large divided four-lane Highway 6?

Apples/Oranges comparison. 6 is much more congested (and a four lane) highway than OSR.

On another note. I do not buy into the congestion argument. The actual speed on Highway 6 is relative to the number of cars. At peak times now, the average speed is much lower than 60mph.

There are solutions : Leave earlier for work. Leave work later.
e.g. If you leave A&M at 4 or 5 you will hit a lot of student traffic. Leave at 4:30 and it is normally a smooth ride.

Howdy,

I believe you mean like 40-45. I come home from Midland/Odessa quite a bit, and 6 is never hitting 80, at the most it's 65, then all of the sudden someone see's something by the Crystal Park Plaza, and we're going 40... I don't see any change in the speed limit, making a difference than the rate ya'll already travel.
