What's the local economic impact of a playoff game? I assume it's along the lines of the tu game last year. Stage doesn't get much bigger. Anyone have any numbers?

Every hotel full. Northgate gets an extra weekend of the students being here because that round is after graduation when they would have normally gone home.

A quick Chat GPT query yields the following. It's dated so extrapolate accordingly with a larger stadium and the factors noted above that would make a game that weekend unique.

I can tell you as a local entrepreneur with 4 restaurants and one bar that it is game changing, particularly due to it occurring during the slowest time of year here every mid December.

The concert and soccer game from summer 2024 were so very impactful. I'm sure many of my colleagues/peers in the same business in town run negative cash flow Dec 15-Feb 1 and June 1-Aug 15 just like I do every year, so these types of events make all the difference.

100% agree.

From a contractor's perspective we had it great when JFF was cooking and the team was rolling 2012-2014-ish . When the team has "juice" around it people are pouring back into the community. GREAT for businesses' of all kinds. We see the impact in dollars and cents.

14 million, plus another 3-4 million in concessions and another mil in parking. Total impact could be around 20m when the dust clears, plus all of the money spent around town

For playoffs, ticket sales do not go to the school, only concessions and parking. NCAA writes each host a check for $3 million to cover the costs of hosting a game (security, staffing, etc.). but keep the ticket revenue.

Biggest impact is for hotel, restaurants, bars, and retail.

I misspoke a bit, as the money is distributed to the conferences from NCAA and then to all schools, not just the host schools. Not having the schools set the prices for tickets does keep the costs down some. Although the secondary market is going to be outrageous I fear.

One restaurant I hit up during a recent home game (located across from campus) said they hate it. Said everyone is at the game instead of eating in their dining room.

Yeah we do a TON of work for bar and restaurant owners and they bemoan not having home games. Never heard any of them wish for less home games.

Definitely a win-win for our community.

Note that the CFP is its own organization and outside of NCAA control.

In non-football sports (like volleyball hosting this weekend), NCAA runs the playoffs, takes the revenue, and distributes to conferences, as you described.

In football, CFP (CFP Administration LLC) runs the playoff, collects the ticket revenue, and distributes to the conferences.

Looking forward to it from a C-store perspective. We had a great football season and did very well compared to last year.

As I'm typing this, it looks like we will be playing Notre Dame at Kyle Field.

If the Aggies host a playoff game, what date would that be? 19th or 20th?

With the rise of tailgating these past few years, many restaurantsparticularly those that don't serve alcoholsee only a modest uptick in sales on game days compared to nongame days. However, Sunday mornings and lunchtime sales show a much more significant increase in sales as out of town attendees choose a place to eat before heading home.

An extra home game during this time of the year will definitely be a boom for the local economy during a weekend that sales are usually stagnant.

But we know it would the weekend of the 19th-20th, right?

No matter, I went ahead and checked on hotels. Beginning Wednesday the 17th the prices in BCS start going up drastically. Like triple the normal prices. I've been needing to make a quick trip there to visit relatives, so I'm doing it next week.

Correct, it will be either that Friday or Saturday.

Ha! There will be one game on 12/19 and three on 12/20. No need for ChatGPT to calculate the probability of a Saturday game.

I just got the schedule from ChatGPT. I pulled out my abacus and calculated the percentage all by my lonesome.

The 7-10 and 8-9 match ups most likely get the prime time spots bc those will be the best games.

6-11 most likely gets 11:00 Saturday game if Oregon ends up the 5 seed bc they don't want that game kicking off 9:00AM local. So 5-12 matchup probably gets afternoon Saturday slot.

NCAA has nothing to do with this. The playoffs are completely controlled by the conferences.
