This place is growing faster than many thought it would. Delaying expansion - even toll or HOV lanes - will obviously cost even more in the future. Price won't be going down. Get ready for an east loop.

Adding just one lane in each direction will not do much to relieve the overcrowding. Two lanes would have been much more intelligent. Then the east loop would not have been an issue.
So....have you looked at the plans or just heard what was being said and reported?
There are much more than just 3 lanes in each direction for most of the area being upgraded. Every on-ramp and exit-ramp has a full lane that is being used to merge...so that makes 4 lanes right there. At some points on the plans there are 12 lanes across with all of the extra lanes on the frontage roads and the middle lanes (between frontage road and main lanes)
There are 3 through lanes for the entire length. And a whole lot of auxiliary lanes, so to say there are only 3 lanes in each direction is misleading
Edit: I responded before I saw all of the other well though-out responses.

I'm no expert, but it seems like it would make sense to go ahead and expand 6 to 4 lanes in both directions, as long as they are expanding. It looks like it will need to be 4 lanes within the next 10 years, anyway.
Not excited about the diamond intersection at 6 and University. The one at 2818 and University can be a real pain if you get behind or next to people who don't know what they are doing or which lane they need to be in.

I really don't get why these give people so much trouble. It's not rocket science to drive one.

I just got off 6 for the third time today and still haven't noticed a 60 sign. I did see CSPD in the median just south of Harvey, however. I think they could use some additional signs.

I went through the Longmire & Eagle roundabout yesterday. Cars approached from each direction at the same time. All of us just kept moving. It was glorious.

So what you're saying is improvements are planned for 20 years of need but expect additional multi year projects to occur in the interim that will disrupt traffic flow for a year or two? Just like we had a year or two of traffic impediments when they redid the overpasses 10 years or so ago. Again, we are back to impeding traffic along Hwy 6 every 10 years or so.
I'm fiscally conservative in most cases but infrastructure isn't one of them. Over plan and develop roads, bridges, police and fire and be conservative on everything else. I don't see growth slowing for this area unless A&M decides to shrink. If A&M is planning on reaching 100K students and RELIS and other industries continue to migrate here, let's get ahead of the incoming population curve. In 15 years when 6 lane Hwy 6 is becoming congested like its become the last 4 or 5 we'll be thankful. It's a mute point at this time for this project but my hope is my way of thinking accepted for future projects.
Bryan/College Station is much like Austin in the 80's. We're approaching a half million in population if you take into account Brazos and the immediate surrounding counties. Once population hits a half million it tends to explode exponentially not the other direction. If the interstate does get developed through our area in the next 20 to 30 years, Katie bar the door, this place will grow even faster.
