Saw this for sale in a local business and am trying to figure out which part of town I am seeing here. I thought maybe the quad looking towards O&M but that isn't right.

Is that a steeple in the background or an antenna?

That's the mythical downtown College Station

I'm struggling to get that to match up with anything. What is the steeple thing? All I can think of is the new St. Mary's, but then where are the apartments around there?

Edit: After flying around campus for a few minutes in Google Earth, I'm convinced the view above does not exist today. Maybe it's some old stuff. Maybe it's just a bunch of random buildings and elements combined as "art". Maybe I'm wrong and someone can identify it.

At first I thought maybe the LaSalle was the large building? But the rest doesn't make sense.

Might be too tall to be the LaSalle but too short to be Momentum Bank Tower of Mordor.

It only appears once every hundred years.

Like Brigadoon.

I thought about the LaSalle too, but it's not it. That's also Bryan, not College Station.

Not Rudder, not O&M, not new hotel, not Momentum. I have no idea what the tall building is. I think it's just conceptual. It looks like campus, but isn't any specific area. Idk I don't really understand art.

What was the name of the high rise condos on University and Texas in the 90s?

The condos in the old Ramada?

University Towers or something?

University Towers. I don't know what it was before then. I had a buddy that lived in there. Those might have been the most expensive in town at the time.

It was a hotel. I attended a wedding there in the early 90's.

I guess my friend lived in a hotel then with a couple thousand other kids. It was an off-campus dorm. This was mid-90s. Where WOB is/was now.

It was a hotel, then a dorm in the 90s, then back to a hotel in the early 2000s. It was demo'd when I lived on campus. I wanted to see the implosion but 6am or whenever it was was too early for me at the time.

Looks like AI slop. There are clearly some artifacts that look like parts of cars, but they are bits and pieces warped into oblivion. Window frames turn into columns that end at a spot where the building clearly is not.

I went and took my son and took him to school late so we could witness the implosion.

It's still a mystery to me why Sharp was there to push the plunger.

IIRC, in the early 1990's, there was a gas station on that corner, with the hotel/student housing/hotel just north of it.

I don't think so.

The gas station was Pipers Gulf.

But that was long before the hotel converted to the dorm, right?

And there was a Kettle over there somewhere?

I just did a deep dive. From: Brazos Buildings & Businesses :

Quote:

This was originally a Gulf station, opening too long after the Ramada, with a garage. It was kept relatively updated, with the only known change being turned into a Chevron in the late 1980s, which gave it a re-do on the trim from red-orange tiles to the early 1990s-era Chevron blue-and-gray. This was, of course, due to Gulf Oil being bought by Standard Oil of California in 1985. Standard Oil of California changed its name later that year to reflect its flagship brand, Chevron.

This particular Chevron gas station was finally shut down in the mid-2000s and torn down circa 2007. I don't remember the garage specifically, however--it's possible that it was converted into a convenience store in the 1990s (but I have no proof of that). Some older phone books refer to this as "Piper's Gulf (later "Chevron", of course) Service Center". The address of this was 420 Texas Avenue. A decent enough picture of the gas station (Chevron) can be seen at the main Ramada Inn article.

I knew Larry's brother Peter from the farmer's market. His peppers were always the BEST!

Strange guy. Insulted me at the bar at Veritas in a weird on-the-spectrum way…had no idea he was doing it. I was friends with his ex for a time who is very nice.

Never big on his art but I do give him credit for his genuine love of Aggie culture.

That does *look* like his work. Not a compliment necessarily.

I think it's someone's attempt at using AI to produce work similar to his.

I saw it at Galleria spa and salon at Century Square while looking for a gift. It's not a Knox for sure, I just don't what that is supposed to be.

In response to your original question, pretty sure that's an antennae and not a steeple. I'm wondering if it's a terrible rendition of the Oceanography thing on campus?

It has a bit of an Empire State/Chrysler building vibe at the top. That's not anything we have around here.
