Is there something wrong with me for using/liking Chase?

This. I use Capital One. Better rates. I don't need a local bank.

We've been with Wells Fargo since the Norwest merger in 1998 and they've been great.

We have been very happy with Frost. We have moved 90% of our banking away from Wells Fargo and USAA to Frost.

Minus those pesky lawsuits, federal violations, and settlements... right?

First National Bank of Central Texas. Based out of Waco. Good people. Supposed to open new bank next to Gringos sometime in February

That's where I plan on moving to eventually. Was it pretty painless moving stuff from Wells Fargo over to Frost?

That has not affected our personal or business banking at all, so...

Yeah. I waited until frost was set up- used zelle to transfer some over immediately, then went in, closed acct, and had funds moved

Good to hear. Always wanted to move back over to Frost, but was never really feasible until they opened locations here.

They are great. Their online banking is pretty great with mobile deposits being available next day- no holds. They also have a monopoly on ATMs in HEB and CircleK. So if you can't get into a branch, you can always get to an ATM without fees at HEB or Circle K.

It's clear that most of the respondents on this thread have a very broad definition of "local bank".

Every bank with a branch in town is "local".

The distinction is community, regional, and too-big-to-fail nationwide banks.

I bank at Brenham National, a community bank, for the reasons a previous poster noted. I have yet to get them to send an ice cream sandwich through the tube in the drive thru though.

It seems like most larger banks nickel and dime a customer (they make millions on fees)
1% interest paid up to 25K
no ATM fees anywhere
free mobile deposit free bill pay
FREE BLUE BELL

rest my case

I like a bank where the underwriting department and the loan committee know where I am and who I am with loans. While they have a lot of narrow rules pushed down by the government, the to big to fails find the easiest answer to be NO if something is a little bit different than their recipe. Local banks want to make the loan and are partners in making it happen in my experience.

They're a dying breed but I'm sentimental for old timey banks (think George Bailey's place from Its a Wonderful Life). Friendly staff who know you, but also a certain aesthetic that I can't really put into words other than to note that banks used to have very pleasing architecture inside and out. I miss that.

I just went in Thursday to Amarillo National Bank to open a checking account. Walked in no appointment, no waiting, done in 10 minutes.

Friendly, courteous and down to business. Couldn't ask for a better experience.

This is completely true and actually by design. A good bank knows what it's good at and avoids the rest. A good banker will tell you they aren't good at whatever loan you're pursuing and will help you find a better fit. I have clients at Chase and my banker there does exactly that when I need something.

Not all loans are the same. Home mortgages are a commodity so pretty much all banks do them. Small business loans are significantly harder to underwrite due to differences in collateral so banks figure out what they want to be good at and what they don't have the ability to adequately understand. Prior to being acquired by First Financial, The Bank & Trust considered itself a real estate and construction bank and often avoided things like business lines of credit secured by Accounts Receivable and Inventory. Meanwhile I've seen ANB do great things with those same lines. No local banks even do credit cards, they all white label cards from the bigger banks.

Point is if you're looking to borrow money you have to know what you're borrowing for and find a bank that likes that type of loan. There are things your local bank can't or won't touch.

I moved multiple accounts and bill pay from Wells Fargo to Brenham National after being with WF since before their first branch here. I was happy with them for the most part but then they dropped the ball on a few things. While the local WF bankers listened to me, they said that I needed to talk to the corporate mother ship and the corporate team completely blew me off multiple times. I've heard good things about Amarillo as well.

No one has mentioned VeraBank, so I will. We've banked with various banks large and small for personal and commercial.

We've found VeraBank to be one of the best - responsiveness to requests, personal/local relationships, easy app, convenient locations, and maybe most importantly, a very experienced and respected staff that works as a team.

Jeff, Baylor, and Kyler all very capable as well as other staff depending on your needs.

Then you would really like the Prosperity bank building in downtown Navasota. I needed to stop there while traveling thru and the old building was cool.

I like first Financial Bank, recently switched them from a nationwide Bank. They are a bit behind the times on technology though. Much stricter limits on zelle and mobile deposits, clunky app, and a requirement to call for certain types of transactions. That said, we've developed a closer relationship with the human bankers, and that's already paid off In several ways.

100 % agree. I have both commercial and personal. One of best I've ever dealt with.

We had a car loan at Aggieland CU several years ago and it was fine. HOWEVER, my parents had an account with them and were told that they would always ask security questions before handling certain things and two times in row when they were suppose to ask to verify, they didn't , and that rubbed them the wrong way. So they have since pulled their accounts and went elsewhere.

IF I were to go back to them for anything, it would only be for a car loan or something like that.

Car loans are commodities like mortgages are. Doesn't really matter who's carrying the note, always take the best combination of rate and time. Except Bank of America. Never use Bank of America for anything.

I guess it's not "local" for here but I bank at Normangee State Bank. Never have had any issues ever. Great folks!!
We'll win this war, but we'll win it only by fighting and by showing the Germans that we've got more guts than they have, or ever will have. We're not going to just shoot the sons-of-b******, were going to rip out their living G*******d guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy Hun c********** by the bushel-f****** basket. War is a bloody killing business. You've got to spill their blood or they will spill yours. Rip them up the belly. Shot them in the guts.

Verabank, specifically the one near Academy. I don't even have to introduce myself when I call. Very easy to work with.

I guess I don't understand how this applies to my post?

Looking for bank providing "personal touch" for elderly relative new to town.

Any suggestions? They seem unhappy with visits to the local Chase, WF, etc.

Brenham National Bank

Everyone who works there is very nice. Most of them will recognize you and say hi and your name.

They also have an ice cream freezer (like at a convenience store) so you can get a free little cup of ice cream, ice cream sandwich, or similar. They also have lollipops (I forgot what kind they are, but there are a bunch of choices of flavors), and they have coffee and chairs where people can sit if someone wanted to drink the coffee there instead of taking it to go.
