I made my bi-annual trek to Austin last weekend and was disappointed to find that Rainey Street has all but been destroyed as there are only a handful of bars left and nobody in them as on a Saturday there was very little foot traffic.

6th Street is also a shadow of it's former self as the actual live music has been replaced with hip-hop dj's in many venues and most of the old venues are either closed or have changed formats.

I used to love Austin because you could find entertainment districts where you could bounce from bar to bar and find a variety of live music in just about any genre.

With the demise of Rainey Street and 6th Street, is there anyplace (bar or strip of bars) that you would recommend where Gen-Xers are not totally out of place?

I live up North and I am officially elderly. We prefer the square in Georgetown, Lucky Rabbit in Jonestown, the bars in Old Town Leander, Liberty Hill Beer Market, Whitestone Brewing, etc.

the area on West 6th is a little older. you can be 30-50 and feel a little more comfortable

the Proper Hotel is a hot spot for a nicer crowd

Live music isn't what it used to be. Spur of the moment we do rooftop bars, oyster bars and jazz clubs. Everything else is hard to find and takes long term planning. There's nothing like a Mai Tai at Zanzibar during rush hour, or a Bill's Oyster happy hour on a Wednesday though.

Fortunately, we like jazz and Austin doesn't. You can usually find something a week ahead (or less) at Monk's or the Elephant room. Monk's is a tiny BYOB, and isn't open every day. Beverage choices at the Elephant Room are not great, but its location is. We spent a lot of time in Kyoto II back in the day. Never went downstairs to the Elephant Room back then, it was too smoky.

We are full time freeloaders now and always looking. I first moved here in 1979. It has changed a bit.

I was at the JW Marriott and tried to go to Elephant Room, but the line to get in was long and not moving, so I gave up after 15 minutes.

Did you visit the Edge rooftop bar? Easiest way to find Zanzibar is from the edge. Then you just have to find the funky green elevator on the street to access.

Shiner's Saloon at 4th and Congress says they have live music every night. It's rarely crowded unless a big name is playing that night.

The east side is really the best spot to walk from bar to bar on 7th and 6th. The lucky Duck or Latch key, the ages vary, so there is young and old. Inn cahoots does have some good music most weekends.
