How uneducated we have become. This is becoming a cruel joke. We pay all these taxes (1 billion dollar bond) and this district is just flat out horrible now (the district is insolvent) and now this.

Let's hear the excuses!!!

"New this school year: Round Rock ISD high schools will no longer be required to administer cumulative final exams, implement finals week schedules, or offer final exam exemptions based on attendance."

"Novedades para este año escolar: Las preparatorias de Round Rock ISD ya no tendrn que realizar pruebas finales acumulativas, implementar horarios para la semana de pruebas finales, ni ofrecer exenciones de pruebas finales basndose en la asistencia."

Leander hasn't had finals since before COVID.

Also the majority of kids are STAAR and AP Testing the last month of school so it's kind of silly to throw finals on top of that.

Why would you have kids standardized test but not take finals. Standardized test are built for the minimum. How do we get to a point where we're planning education around the minimum? The school districts have zero expectation and that's why a lot of these kids are never going to be better after high school. How's the kid supposed to pass finals in college if he hasn't prepared for finals in high school?

Oh standardized tests are bull**** and mostly pointless. Any kid having to prepare for a standardized test probably won't be attending a 4 year university anyway and that is completely fine. Go learn a trade, don't accumulate a bunch of debt, it's actually pretty fantastic.

The chunk of kids who aren't having to prepare for standardized tests are going to be your kids who are likely taking multiple AP Exams. These are also the kids who are going to be attending 4 year universities. Preparing for and taking multiple AP exams is likely more rigorous than anything they would face in college. Some of these kids are taking 7-8 AP Exams in a 2 week period. So these kids attending 4 year universities will be more than prepared for finals in college.

Those kids are screwed once they are up against their first college finals.

I didn't take a single AP test, but did dual credit, went to a 4 year university, and graduated from a full time top 10 MBA program. Learning how to study for finals was important for me, and I'm not an outlier

Isn't dual credit through a university partnering with the high school? If so, you are following the universities rules. So preparing for and taking finals would be the norm.

Yes. I learned the hard way that you will have to study and prepare at some point in college. Public education is too easy now and the grading has been compressed too much to properly evaluate and really help teach students to their individual potentials

The AP classes my kid takes at RRHS are good. Challenging. Tough grading. No nonsense. Not sure how much finals matter anyway since kids can exempt them. That's been true for forever I think. It's the regular class stuff that's hard to deal with.

Yeah I mean I graduated HS in 2011 and took mostly AP courses and if I took the AP test our teachers typically just used that to exempt the final. I was also a teacher from 2016-2018 and departments encouraged the Final being an extra and that the final exam could substitute your lowest test score and your highest test score would function as the final.

Not accurate. There is far more correlation to being on grade level on the staar and success in college than in passing a watered down final. Why do you think we so often hear "my kids do great on the final but poorly on the staar"? Its because the final is designed to make the teacher/school look good, the staar compares them to their peers and grade level expectations. The vast majority of instruction and finals are not on grade level.

I'm currently in my 17th year teaching. The last 7 of those have been spent in high school mostly working with AP students.

But yes… I have no idea what I'm talking about.
