Getting old and the lumbar discs are wrecking me. I've been doing the whack-a-mole approach and trying different approaches (chiro, Airrosti, etc.). Has anyone had experiences with a physical therapist, doctor, or other that they would recommend? TIA!

For a doctor I would recommend Neil Shah in Las Colinas. Mind you, I have had 3 back surgeries performed by him for lower back issues (disk degeneration, etc.). Not sure how serious your issues are, but he has a great reputation in the area, and is an Ag to boot.

Im a big fan of the inversion table, my back definitely feels better if I spending a few minutes on it a couple times a day. Also, if you are over weight, that is likely a considerable cause of the problem. Core strength improvement wouldn't hurt.

I go to the chiro for my hip, but I can take care of my back myself.

I'm a PT and happy to refer to colleagues around the area if you are interested. Also can give some insight into physicians/pain management if that is a route you choose.

No recommendations but advice.

The thing that helped my back pain the most was a new mattress. One morning I got out of bed and fell over and couldn't get up I was in so much pain. I was 23 years old but had been sleeping on a 15 year old mattress.

I slept on my couch until I could go see a chiropractor who adjusted me and I was able to get a mattress that better supported my back. Now 9 years later still no issues. I've bought two mattresses since then.

It can make a world of difference

Will echo invest in the best bed you can afford. The challenge with that is knowing how you will respond to it. At least a lot of the bed makers will offer a 100 day test run with it. Personally, I will never not own a SleepNumber. It's the only bed I've had since before puberty that doesn't make my back hurt. The downside is that they are expensive as hell.

The other thing I've recently discovered that has helped a lot is to use a foam roller on my hips. I did not realize how tight my hips were until I started doing this and it has helped tremendously. You might be completely unstable in your hips and not realize it which will, in turn, jack your back up. I've been rolling my hips daily (about 1 minute on each) for close to a month.

Unless you know for a fact that you have disc/structural issues, a lot of lower back pain stems from a combination of tightness and weakness through the hamstrings, glutes, hip flexors, and abdominals (among others). I dealt with low back pain off and on for years, but started doing yoga about 8 years ago. It's not a quick fix, and if your dealing with tight/weak muscles, there is no legitimate quick fix, but over time it will work wonders. It's made a massive difference in my life, and I highly recommended it to everyone I know.
