Is it just me or is driving just completely wild after the pandemic?

  • Red lights are merely suggestions
  • People are trying to coexist going between 40 and 95 on the same highway
  • I NEVER drive at night without seeing someone with their lights completely off
  • Every crash barrier or guardrail has gotten smoked and needs repair

This morning I-30 westbound was completely shut down near arlington after a huge sign got taken out and required cranes to clear

Last weekend I nearly got hit by a wrong way driver on Southwestern at 11 in the morning.

I also had somebody in a charger or challenger going 10 under the speed limit brake check me, then try to drive up right next to me on the way to the gym on Sunday

Coming back from Christmas I nearly got hit by a flying wheelbarrow

The list goes on...it's either madness out there or maybe i'm the old man yelling at cloud.

Got to keep your head on a swivel and always check Waze.

I don't ever see any issues like this. However my 3 mile commute through east Frisco is filled with folks from India driving Tesla's 10 mph under the speed limit.

Yup..the headlights being off have gotten bad here recently. I never honk at the person in front of me when the light turns green any more because who knows who will be blowing through it 2X the speed limit.

Agreed op. It is wild out there. A freaking super speedway

It's because of all the idiots who have moved here from out of state.

The traffic is definitely heavier now than anytime since COVID but I don't think I've seen drivers noticeable worse.

Red light running is absolutely insane. You see cars go through a solid 3-count from the other ways green. I'm shocked there aren't more major wrecks.

Even started seeing FWISD busses running them in the past couple weeks

Anytime I am first at a red light and it turns green, I always count to three before I go. If I haven't done that I'd likely be dead by now.

For you habitual speeders, when was the last time you got a ticket?

That will give you some insight on to why traffic has become more and more reckless.

It's been 3 years since my last ticket, and I wasnt even really trying to speed (was in my Jeep Wrangler). Just wasnt paying attention to my speed.

That being said, I routinely drive above the speed limit in my other vehicle. Waze makes driving easier (not fool proof though).

In Dallas at least, police have done very little traffic enforcement the last few years. Probably plays a part.

I just see a fraction of the amount cops pulling of traffic that I used to (for better or for worse).

Over time, I think that has made everyone a lot more brazen about running lights/stop-signs/whatever.

According to State Racial Profiling Data, the Dallas Police Department initiated a traffic stop for the stated purpose of "Moving Traffic Violation" 47,192 times in 2021. They initiated a total of 62,380 stops for all purposes and issued a total of 40,102 citations. Plano pulled over 52,212 for moving violations in a much smaller city.

As a point of comparison, according to the Dallas Morning News, DPD issued about 479,500 tickets in fiscal 2006-2007 and even that number was in the midst of a many year decline.

I used to get absolutely pissed and bent out of shape over bad/stupid/rude drivers. Dr said I need to manage my stress on account of the blood pressure. Now I spend most of my commute time checking my email, twitter, facebook. Rarely even notice other drivers these days.

My sister in law got a 42 in a 35 in Cisco, TX the other day, but I agree, hardly any traffic cops in DFW from what I can tell. I guess they're too afraid to pull over anyone in fear of escalation?

The only ticket I received for speeding in Dallas, and yea knock on wood, was on my own street. Prior house I lived in was inside the school zone and I didn't really think about it. Think it was 7:05 and it came on at 7. Clocked going 28 in a 20.

Cop gave me attitude as well.

Well…. You we're going 140% of the posted speed limit. That's equivalent to driving 105 on the interstate.

As someone that moved from out of state 3+ decades ago this is nothing new. Texas drivers have been horrible as long as I've lived here.

My observation is Dallas County is much worse than Tarrant. Will see four or five cars running red light in Dallas - usually just one or perhaps two in Arlington.

No doubt. I was for sure guilty of speeding. The cop didn't like the comment when I asked if he clocked me on my street or my driveway.

That's like 90% drop compared to 2006-2007. Is that right???

I've seen all that, but it doesn't seem particularly worse than any other large cities I've driven in.

I agree a lot is attributable to police not being concerned with traffic violations. Rarely see any radar traps especially anywhere central Dallas.

In fact I haven't updated my inspection or registration in an embarrassing amount of time cuz nobody seems to care anymore.

Lol I usually update the registration every 2 years at this point.

Running red lights has gotten worse. I don't really notice the speeding. What I do notice is people weaving way more. Also just more wrecks in general it seems

Funny I don't drive at night very often (as a %of my driving), but last night I saw 2 cars with headlights off on Lebanon in Frisco. One was definitely of the south Asian persuasion.

the red light running here in southside fw is off the charts. Not to mention the wealthy California tcu girl in a porsche cayenne yesterday that almost took me out on mccart (still don't know its 2 lanes one way)

I've been driving in DFW for over 40 years. I get road rage just backing out of the driveway.

Road rage is noticeably escalating, at least in Fort Worth. So many friends have told me about crazy encounters they've had around town with other drivers losing their ****, plus it seems like there have been more shootings on the freeway than I've ever heard of before. I recently had an incident that has almost made me not want to drive anywhere at all:

A couple weeks ago I was waiting at a red light to make a right. There was a steady stream of oncoming traffic, so I couldn't turn on the red. A car pulled up behind me and immediately started laying on the horn. He stayed on it for the entire light cycle and I could see him in my rear view screaming, red faced, veins showing, and all. My kid was in the backseat and I was terrified, but there was nowhere to go short of pulling into traffic. When it finally changed and I turned, he whipped around me, slammed on his brakes so hard that I was inches from rear ending him, put his car in park and jumped out. I had to reverse to get enough space to go around him, which of course nearly caused an accident with the cars coming up behind and around me. I drove a little way down the road until I was confident he hadn't followed me, and turned into a parking lot to call the police and to calm myself and my hysterical child. A lady had followed me and she came over to my car to tell me that she'd watched the whole thing and had gotten a photo of the vehicle, but not the license plate. The FWPD cop who responded was very sympathetic, but basically said there wasn't anything to be done. He confirmed that there has been an increase in calls about road rage incidents lately. I don't know what's causing it, but it's scary for sure.

The prevalence of driving with the lights off thing blows my mind. It's almost every other night I see it N Dallas/Addison. I mean how hard is it to put the lights on the 'Auto' setting? Coming up behind an all black car all of a sudden will really raise the adrenaline.
