Howdy! I am looking for help trying to find the best shade tolerant grass to put down in the areas under a large oak tree next to the house. Any suggestions?

St Augustine or Emerald Zoysia are the usual suspects for this situation. Both are best done with new sod. You can seed with a rye/fescue, but they don't do great in the heat of summer.

St Augustine will be the most shade tolerant of the two if it is really shady. Make sure you keep the tree trimmed. I have monster live oaks in front and back, and have a crew come out every 2 years. They do a good job of not making the trees look stupid, and it makes a big difference in my St Aug looking good

mondo or dwarf mondo. even the shade tolerant grass wont do well under a full tree.

Anyone have any experience with Palmetto St Augustine in shaded areas? Curious if it's worth the extra investment vs. Raleigh or whatever other common varieties are available.

I have palmetto in my front yard. It is really good and takes the cold really well so far. No die offs from the last few snows. Infact iceamgeddon didn't phase it ewither

I have had palmetto as well for about 15 years. I've had no disease issues or die offs from the crazy freezes, and it's held up well in the shade. It's still going to need 3-4 hours of sun, but again, by being vigilant with your tree trimming, that is very doable

Palmetto is your best bet. You need to trim trees to give it some sun, keep it well watered, and minimize traffic on it.

I would reiterate the 3-4 hours of sunlight needed. I had a heavily treed backyard and my Palmetto stayed pretty thin because it wasn't getting consistent sun.

Yeah, any sections that stay pretty much entirely shade all day even with trimming, it's time to consider a non-grass alternative. But with the right trimming effort along with keeping good care of the sod with proper watering and fertilizer, you should be able to really limit how much space that is

I'm late on this thread but I have two big oak trees in my front yard, which is pretty small, and the yard used to be more dirt/mud than grass. Two years ago, we replaced it with something called Amerishade, a new type of St. Augustine, and it has been excellent. Our grass has never looked better. It's not perfect, but much better. I did extend our flower beds as well to take up space that can never grow grass at all as it gets almost zero sun.

I will let you know at the end of summer. Two large live oaks on the north side of the house. Could never get any of the St. Augustine varieties to work because of the shallow oak roots. Went to Zorro Zoysia two years ago but it always struggled out of winter to repair itself from all activity from kids playing. Last fall I overseeded with Nightshift's Turf Type Tall Fescue and it has absolutely rocked all spring. Between the irrigation and no direct sunlight from 1-6, hoping this can hold on till the fall and become permanent.

Mondo or Dwarf Mondo is the for sure answer here. We put synthetic in the back. Best decision ever when you have a big dog that wrecks shop.
