Halfway through my first pregnancy now, I'm finding out just how intense those preg cravings can be...and for the first time in several years, I'm looking for donuts (hubby is ecstatic). Besides making my own at home (dangerous) - anyone have a favorite Houston donut shop?

Second for Shipley's. North Main location has the best plain glazed donuts in the world IMO.

Not only does the Shipley's on N. Main have great donuts but they use the same dough to make their kolaches which makes them better. Only location that does that and boudin kolaches on Sat. morning.

Doesn't Shipley's use Mexican indentured servants to make their donuts?

Nope all locations use the doughnut dough for the kolaches.

There's a location off Highway 3 in Seabrook that does venison sausage kolaches during hunting season.

Shipleys at Richmond and 59 Spur coming into Downtown does well with it's glazed cake donuts -- blueberry and buttermilk -- my preference.

I am always in search of the best Czech fruit filled kolaches including cream cheese, cottage cheese and poppy seed and all with crumbled buttered/sugar on top -- anyone with recommendations?

Shipley's on N.Main still uses the 1930's recipe for cooking/icing the glazed donuts. Other Shipley's don't. Go to the N.Main location - they sell lots of 'em and they're always fresh.
agzwin - I'm like you looking for the fruit kolaches as well. please post if you find some with the same luscious dough as in central tx places.

i've had the ones on north main, and while they are different than other shipley's locations, i disagree that they are "better". they are slightly crispier and chewier. if offered one of their doughnuts or the typical shipley donut, i'd pick whichever one was closest to coming out of the frier.

Shipley's owned slum houses where they housed their illegals, several former supervisors were convicted of confiscating part of the illegal workers wages by threatening to kick them out of the house if they didn't pay, kids and all. Many of the employees ended up earning less than the minimum wage
But yeah they were probably happy.

Lawrence Shipley was convicted on several counts as well and paid a $1.5 million fine.

So glad no one has thrown Krispy Krap in the mix... How much better is Shipleys than Krispy Krap? I mean really? I don't think they make a unit of awesome big enough to show that difference.

I go to Shipley's, but KK made an incredible glazed. Maybe tooooo sweet, but i dont see how someone cant like those.

Ive never found a place in town that does LaGrange/Edinger/Caldwell style kolaches/klobasnaky. Shipley's actually has the best klob in Houston. Ive heard there is a legit kolache place down 45S though.

Round Rock donuts in Austin killed my affinity for Shipleys.

I prefer the Southern Maid chocolate icing better than Shipleys version.
