Dunkin Donuts is coming to Shepard and Fairview in River Oaks (replacing the old Arby's) I hope they can last down here.

You may be referring to the Original Kolache Shoppe out on Telephone Road which was the first one in Houston. Nice lady and they are ok but she uses a lot of dough and it is not the lighter, sweeter, buttery kind I am used to out the La Grange area.

I prefer Kolache Factory's kob more than Shipley's kob but both pale compared to the La Grange area.

It smells of obesity in here. Fail #1 for getting fatter during pregnancy.

I didn't dispute whether or not he was arrested, but rather what was he arrested for.

Shipley's settled a civil lawsuit related to the poor working conditions at their plant on N. Main. I am on my.mobile so you will have to Google it yourself.

So.....I'm right. He wasn't arrested for abusing workers. He was arrested for hiring them in the first place. 15 disgruntled illegal workers then filed a civil suit about mistreatment. The same kind of suit that I can file if I slip on a dropped slurpee at the mall. It seems pretty convenient that they might have been trying to capitalize and get a payday. Not saying that's the case or that Mr. Shipley is a good guy...just that he may not be evil.

They allowed it to go on by ignoring the reports and turning a blind eye to what went on. Why do you think a donut maker needed 14 houses in a fenced in compound next to their factory? Their managers knowingly hired illegals and put them in company owned houses to shield them from the eyes of the feds. Some of those managers used their authority to shake workers down for part of their paycheck, they weren't charging them rent. I am no champion of immigrants rights but I hate it when people scream about illegal immigration but let businesses that hire them off the hook.

Krispy Kreme couldn't compete against Shipleys in Houston, you think the fact they played by the rules thus having higher labor costs might have contributed to that?

Krispy Kreme was awesome. I never understood the Shipleys worship. The same thing will probably happen to Dunkin.

I'm not saying it wasn't bad or illegal. What I am saying is that extortion wasn't proven. They settled the suit. Whether that was to prevent discovery or to keep their name from being dragged through mud even longer, we'll never know.


Also, if Krispy Kreme were the only donuts left on the planet, I would stop eating them. They are gross.

Does anybody remember Winchell's donuts from the '70s/80s? By the way, some of the Shipleys locations do beignets, and they are amazing…

Gourmet donut market is getting saturated real quick down here. I am not sure there is enough demand for that product to sustain 3-4 in this area.
