- Del Frisco's

I would add steak 48 in there and be ok with anyone saying any of those are best in Houston.

B&B is most overrated and overpriced steak I've ever had.

A) how many times have you been.

B) did you go with the regular dry aged or the cellar selection?

Been 4-5 times. Had both including the aged A5 wagyu ribeye or whatever.

Have taken big clients there to some upper 5 figure dinners and everyone is "meh" every time.

I also got a tour of their aging room, which was actually pretty cool.

I will give them props on the service, which has been excellent. They also have a really good scotch and wine selection if you're looking to drop thousands on that stuff in a restaurant. I do feel like they push and take advantage of up-selling to expensive sh#t unnecessarily, but I understand they're there to make money.

It's also kinda of cool you can smoke cigars on their 2nd floor patio if you rent it out.

Have to agree with other on B&B. For the price they should be better. Just tried Mastros and it was a great experience but you can never go wrong with Pappas. Pappas is what a steakhouse should be.

This is the truth. Last time I went it was a pretty depressing experience. They need to hit the reset button.

Thought the steak at Mastros was slightly above average. The patio scene more than compensated though.

Mastros has a great setup but Pappas is still the best all around.

You've taken people out to a $70,000-$90,000 dinner? And their reaction is meh?

Mastros is probably the best place in town for people watching these days. Lots of talent in the bar and patio area.

Is cellar selection anything other than a made up marketing term used to sell a steak and a grossly inflated price?

The answer is Pappa's. I cook an awesome steak, and the answer is still Pappa's.
Which one do you go to? I went to the one on Westheimer the other week and it was average. Definitely not as good as it was 8-10 years ago.

Could be. From what I recall the waiter telling us, it's for their cuts that have been aged at least 30 days or something in their cellar.

I would try Mastros especially if you have already been to Pappas. Our experience at Mastros was excellent. Great steak, nice whiskey list, and great service. Based on the Yelp reviews that hasn't been everyone's experience there but they really hit a home run when we went.

$50-$55ish. I think the bone-in-ribeye I had was $58. Of course they have more premium options but I'm pretty much always ok with the regular prime steaks.

I would give it a shot. Go check out the hotel next door after you eat. Very nice setup there as well.

They had an indoor/outdoor setup going when we went so try to book a reservation when the weather is nice.

I would agree. I feel like the Yelpers were looking for things to complain about because it's a trendy new restaurant.

They've been open a few months now so maybe there were some hiccups initially but the service was great for us as well.

If you go to Pappas, get their lobster deviled eggs for an appetizer.

Since your girlfriend is moving to Houston, I suspect you are looking for steakhouse that are both romantic and somewhat representative of Houston.

I would suggest the following:

1. The Palm - been in Houston forever, fairly romantic, perfect service. Steaks are very passable.
2. Pappas - Houston pedigree, beautiful interior, romantic, good food. I find it to be a little loud.
3. Brenners on Bayou - Houston pedigree, beautiful interior, great view, romantic. Relatively passable food.

Just a couple different ideas.

Went to Pappas for the first time a couple weeks ago and I'll second the rec on the lobster deviled eggs.

That being said, I thought it was good but it really didn't find it to be any better than other high-end steakhouses. I had the bone-in prime rib eye. But the level of service and attention from the waiter and sommelier was outstanding.

edit: in other words, I'm not sure there's much of a difference between Pappas, V&A, Del Frisco's, or even Capital Grille. Eddie V's might even fit up there too. Haven't been to B&B or Mastro's. Nor have I been to Steak 48 but I've heard from people who's opinions I respect on such things that Steak 48 is incredibly overrated.

When my wife and I go to a steakhouse, our go-to app is usually the crab cake, but we decided to try something new at Pappas last time and loved it. The spiciness is just enough to feel but not over powering. The only problem is I may have to order one just for myself going forward.

As far as service at the steakhouses, they've all been outstanding as you'd expect for a place where you're dropping $300+ for a dinner for 2. I have to say that Del Frisco's is the only place where I got a hand written thank you letter from our waiter mailed to the house. I have no clue how they got my address (CC I'm guessing), but I was shocked.

Wife and I went to Capital Grille once for our anniversary and they had our steaks cooked backwards (wouldn't normally matter, but we had 2 different cuts), so they took everything back (my steak, sides, etc) and brought out fresh everything when hers was ready. While we waited, the manager came by and comped a bottle of house wine and then comped a dessert. I told him that it was beyond what we felt was reasonable for a mistake, but he stated that we shouldn't be inconvenienced because they had a mix up in the kitchen.

At McCormick & Schmicks Uptown Park I ordered a Cognac for after dinner and waited about 15 mins for it before the manager walked up with it stating the waiter forgot to order it from the bar but remembered so he was comping the drink plus offered for us to come back later that week for a comped meal.
