Serious black smoke coming from that thing, definitely with a strong smell. What are they burning?

In 2024, I expected this to be about drag bingo.
Its most likely due to a upset condition and you are sending to much to the flare to handle, but yeah its not destructing 'whatever it is' at the designed rate.

smoke does not mean a flare is not working as intended
Turn up the blower, the smoke will go away.
